A Remembrance for this Memorial Day

This weekend, we are celebrating Memorial Day.  Many friends celebrate Memorial Day by hosting barbecues and pool parties as their official "kick off" of Summer.

Most importantly though is that Memorial Day is a day of remembering.  Unlike Veterans' Day, when we remember all those who served in the United States Military....during Memorial Day we remember all the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day.  The United States flag will be raised briskly at dawn to the top of the staff and then lowered to half-staff in remembrance of those who died, where it will remain until noon.  At noon, it will then be raised to full-staff as a symbol of their memories being raised by the living.

On Memorial Day, a bugler will blow 'Taps' in honor of the deceased.

Many of you may not know this, but is in charge of our local youth orchestra (she's artsy like me!).  The organization offers orchestral music education to our county's young (8-18 years of age) musicians...it offers a Chamber Music Program as well.

During the final chamber music performance, Ma's favorite ensemble - the Brass - performed a patriotic piece.  It wasn't 'Taps' since that is a lone bugle or trumpet.  They performed 'The Stars and Stripes Forever' and we thought it would be a perfect remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to our country on this Memorial Day.

We hope you enjoy it.

  1. Aww, that band was really good! I liked hearing about the history of memorial day, it's like remembrance day for the USA. Grace's school concert band are the best for their category in the UK. She plays the flute, but she's never let me woof down it!
    Have a super week,
    Pippa :)

  4. Thanks for this reminder post, Oz. Last year, we visited a veterans cemetery (where Jason's grandma was laid to rest the summer before) and we ended up spending the whole day being a part of all the Memorial Day festivities. I highly recommend visiting a veterans cemetery on Memorial Day to anyone who wants to acknowledge the lives of the amazing service men and women who gave their lives for us, whether one such brave person was in your family or not.

  11. Loved the video, Oz. Many forget the meaning of this day, but, to those who have served, this is a day when everyone should stop and say 'thank you'.
