I recently got to meet several of my blogging friends who
are tried-and-true Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs and it was great. And you know what I noticed
immediately...they follow commands a lot better than I do. BOL
I know, I know...not following commands is NOT something to
laugh about. Commands like
"sit", "down" and "stay" are important and can
keep a dog out of harm's way.
I have known these commands since I was very young and I
know them by hand signal, in English and in Spanish. However, put me in a distracting environment
(noise, kids, other dogs) and great dog...I tend to lose it.
Then Ma came across this great video at Pet360 where dog
trainer Victoria Schade teaches how to reinforce the "stay"
command. She watched it and then gave me
a "stay" test.
As you can see, the first time...I failed miserably. Can I help it if I am a nosey terrier and
want to see what Ma is doing when she goes around the corner?!?
Never mind that she just says "Stay!" Why can't she sing it to me like that song by
Rhianna ("...I want you to staaaaaaaay-ay-ay...")? That would be so much nicer.
Anyway, I did better the second time around.
So, now Ma is reinforcing "stay" for a few minutes
every day. Even though these
"lessons" cut into my nap time, I find I am enjoying the time with Ma
(and of course, the little treat she gives me at the end).

DeleteOh, let me help! I am SO good at "stay". Momma says I'm "like a rock." When I was training for my Canine Good Citizen certification, I had to practice staying with distractions. My trainer lady would toss around loud toys, rattle a box of rocks, and even drop a metal folding chair on the concrete, and I didn't MOVE.

DeleteOur Mom plays the hide and seek game with us - she makes us sit and stay then goes and hide cookies in a different room - which we then have to find.....sometimes we just have to find here and no cookies which is so not fair!

DeleteBoth my dogs have a wonderful Stay! It's the Come command that elicits selective hearing!

DeleteShiner does the same stuffs Oz. She can be a little stubborn sometimes, but we've been working on "stay" a little bit lately too.

DeleteHigh Paw Oz! Well, you know I have a strong stay. BOL! I tend to alternate between sit (if I'm nervous or curious) and down (when I'm tired or bored), but Mom is happy as long as my tushie stays in the same spot. BOL!!

Deletehhhmmm Mom says she is going to watch the video! I do better outside than I do in the house (weird huh?) The only thing that kept me from my Beginner Novice Obedience title a couple of weeks ago was breaking my sit stay on the 3rd day (I was tired). We are going to try again in a couple of weeks

DeleteKatie and I do pretty well with our commands, the only problem is "come" when we have something more important going on but Mom just decided to live with it that way. Mom tried everything with Katie including real sausages but if she doesn't feel like it, forget it. I'm a bit better unless I am tailing a wabbit or squirrel.

DeleteDude, Oz, I seriously think it's a terrier thing! I "technically" know sit and stay and wait...whatever, but that doesn't mean that I follow those recommendations all the time! Bahaha! Excellent work on your stay though, especially if your Mom goes around the corner! Gasp...darn, now Domeek says I'll have to work on it too! :-/

Stay is a tough one. Maya and Pierson are like you where they do pretty good unless something really interesting is going on. They know they have to sit and stay and wait for me to fill their food bowls. But when people come over and they have to sit and stay to wait to be greeted, it is very very difficult.

You look like you are learning quickly. long ago i tested norman for his cgc title and he had to sit and stay as i walked away well he failed. so he never got his cgc. he just had to be by me.

ReplyDeleteSee, when we get to a street corner, Ma makes me sit and stay for about 30 seconds (or longer if there are cars coming... then peeps look and LAUGH!!! I guess they've never seen an Airedale sit and stay before....)

We are a bit lazy with the training, I have to admit. But we did actually just work some on Stay today (cuz it was too hot to go for a walk!). Rita will stay... if she feels like it. She doesn't like me to go far enough that she can't see me. If I go too far away while she's "stay"ing, she'll come looking for me. But we are planning to sign up for a (very belated) obedience class soon, so hopefully that will help!

ReplyDeleteOur dogs do a good stay, but I have to vigilant about it. I can't just toss out a casual "stay" and expect them to listen to me. Having three dogs makes it a little more challenging, but it's doable.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your progress!! I try to give Taylor a 2 min training session after every potty break....otherwise, mommy will forget! Taylor does pretty well with "Stay", but keeping the "Stay" command as I turn around and am out of sight still needs to be worked on.
ReplyDeleteI train Joker through positive reinforcement! He has a great stay, and knows tons of tricks! :) I'm just so proud of my little furball! Anyways check out Kikopup's videos on youtube they are great training tutorials!
ReplyDeleteLOL As you may remember both Freighter and Storm took the stay test recently and both failed miserably. We will be working on it all winter long and hope to get it solid for next hunt test season. :)
ReplyDeleteI work Delilah with this a lot. She is getting so much better! The way I was taught is to just stand in front of the dog, say stay and back up a step or two. Reward!! Slowly you increase your distance. She's gotten to the point where I can actually leave the bathroom with her on her mat and walk into the kitchen and she will still be there. This my friend is progress!!
