I am sure by now many of you have heard of the ThunderLeash, a new no-pull leash made by ThunderWorks, the makers of the ThunderShirt. A while back, I received a ThunderLeash to test out and Ma and I have been playing around with it ever since.
What is ThunderLeash?
The ThunderLeash is a standard leash that can be repositioned into a gentle harness for times when you need a little extra help to not pull. The ThunderLeash wraps around your torso and slides into the special ThunderLeash clasp and provides gentle pressure when a dog starts to pull with the intent to stop the pulling altogether.
Does the ThunderLeash Work?
Though I am not a "puller" all the time on a walk, Ma has used it many times because I will pull if I see say, a bunny (because I want to chase it) or if I see certain dogs in the neighborhood (because I don't "like" them). What Ma noticed right away was when I would go to pull, the ThunderLeash's gentle pressure made me slow down and turn back to look at her - like in this video:
Interesting, right? So now, Ma is using the ThunderLeash as a training leash in the hopes that I will not pull and not terrier-ize the other dogs in the neighborhood that are not on my "like" list. It is slow going but I think Ma may be on to something.
When I start to pull, the ThunderLeash's gentle pressure reminds me to look back at Ma (and not at what is making me pull in the first place). That slight distraction to my terrier-izing, along with positive reinforcement from Ma, has helped me walk better around others already.
Our only complaint: for a small dog, the leash-to-harness clasp seems quite large and too heavy to be used in the standard leash design.

If you are a "puller" while out on a walk, I would recommend you give the ThunderLeash a try. Your human may be surprised at how well it works for you and then you both can enjoy a walk together!

It is definitely gentle...it may not work for everyone, but it is working (slowly) for me.
DeleteWe tried it with Ike who is a strong puller and unfortunately, with the clip on the back instead of in the front, it seemed to give him more power to pull. We like Thunder products and think it would be good for a dog who wasn't a strong puller like Ike.
ReplyDeleteYes, I wasn't sure how it would work for a strong puller since I only pull when there is something to chase...and I am small. The issue we had was the size of the clasp...since it is so big compared to me, it tends to drag the whole harness thing around my body.

DeleteLuckily Rita is not a puller. (Although she has other leash issues!) Our last dog was a puller and the Easy Walker harness worked great with her. That one looks cool. Hope it helps!

DeleteHigh Paw! You are a nice walker :) I am a stubborn puller, not even the front hook ones work on me. When I am determined to go somewhere, and wearing a front hook harness, I turn around and pull backwards. BOL!!

DeleteDing Ding Ding a Ring Hellooooo Oz The Great & Powerful that leash looks nice, I have to wear a snoot loop to keep me from pulling and I think I would like the Thunder Leash if that loop was not to heavy. Now about my train situation, my ticket which Lee bought me say Starlight Express. Lee says I will be seeing stars I don't shape up.

Yes, the size of the clasp on a smaller dog doesn't really work when using the leash as a standard leash. When in harness position though, it isn't too bad.

ReplyDeleteHehe "terrier-ize" - love it! You look very well-behaved on your walk Oz. Shiner begins to pull a lot for the same reasons as you, but she can be very strong. (Not that you aren't strong!) ;)

It works reasonably well. Not as well as some of the other products out there, but I consider it safer and JD considers it more comfortable.

ReplyDeleteInteresting product! Looks like it meets your needs, but I could see how a strong puller (or a dog otherwise trained to pull a cart/sled, but that you don't want to pull on a regular walk) might need something different.
ReplyDeleteMa has a 'harness' called a 'Slip Harness' that is kinda the same idea...it's loose if I'm not pulling and tightens around my chest if I pull. I am quite the puller, and this is the harness that keeps me under control the best so far. Ma ordered it all the way from Australia! The only downside to this harness, is that it tends to slip down to the side, which wouldn't be good for doggies who are sensitive abouts leash rash.

ReplyDeleteIt looks similar to something I have now for Maya. It worked really well at first, but then she learned to disregard the discomfort from when she pulled. She pulls from time to time in it, but can't pull as much as she would if the leash was attached to her collar. I may give the Thunderleash a try.

ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty cool idea. I actually do the same with our leash, but use a different wrap method that matches a no pull harness we used to have. I only have to walk Blue that way for a short while until he settles down and then it's back to normal.

So it doesn't work in the same manner as a harness? Do you know where it's made? I tried looking on their website but couldn't find that.
