Living in Florida, it is hard to go camping at certain times
of the year due to the heat/humidity (May through September) and/or the rain/hurricane
season (May through November). I have
gone camping during those "seasons" but it can get uncomfortably
H-O-T and the rain...dawg, that just makes everything worse.
That's why I am so happy it is January, the beginning of our
(very short) camping season. We will be
heading out to another great Florida State Park very soon so this past weekend
we began our preparations by inspecting the tent (as well as airing it out a
bit).
Daddy-dog was busy getting his camping "battle
box" ready too. I wanted to be sure
all my gear was ready as well so I had Ma help me gather it up and lay it out
for inspection. I am a very knowledgeable
Dog Scout so I pack to be ready for anything.
10 Things I Take Camping
1. A Blanket. I always have my Mexican blanket. It comes in handy for lounging around the campsite
as well as for keeping you warm when the night gets cool.
2. Food Bowls. I have a small stainless steel bowl for my
food (since raw should not be put in plastic or ceramic) and a collapsible bowl
for water. The collapsible bowl with carabiner
is great for hikes and canoeing as well; I just clip it to Daddy-dog's
backpack.
3. A Tie-Out. If you are a dog and you want to hang out on
your campsite, and not be stuck in the tent (or RV if that's what you camp in)
all day, you must be kept on a tie-out.
It is a requirement of Florida State Parks as well as other campgrounds.
4. Leashes. I bring at least two. Both leashes I am bringing this time are
safety orange with reflective material so I am visible hiking and walking at
night.
5. Poop Bags. What dog would go anywhere without them? I bring more than needed since as many of you
know, not everyone scoops the poop. If
we see unclaimed poop, we scoop so that the parks don't prohibit dogs one day.
6. Harnesses. I take at least two harnesses with me, just in
case one gets wet or muddy. I also will
have my Sleepypod Clickit Harness for traveling in the car. Safety first!
7. Lights. My Pet Blinkers light is attached to my leash
so I can be seen while on walks at night. I also bring my Nite Dawg LED collar; it is quite bright so Ma can see where I am
in the darkness of the campground.
8. Flotation
Device. Uncle Robbie loves to go canoeing
and so do I. Everyone needs to be safe
during water sports - that includes dogs.
9. Food and
Treats. I tend to bring more than I
would actually need, just in case. You
do not want to be short on food after a long day hiking.
10. My Hoodie
Sweatshirt. I know what you are
thinking..."Oz, you live in Florida where it is warm! You don't need a hoodie!" Well, guess what. The one time I did NOT bring my hoodie
sweatshirt, the nights got down to the low 40s...and 40s in a tent is pretty
cold. I remember shivering all night
long. So now, I bring it. Better to be safe than sorry, I say.
Of course, there is plenty of other gear a dog can bring
camping (if only I could get my paws on some of it). Is there anything else you would bring?
Oh, and just so you know...Ma is in charge of First Aid
Kits, not me. My First Aid Kit is in
with Ma's, just in case you think we would brave any boo-boos without
ointments, band-aids, etc.
Have you ever gone camping?
What gear did you bring with you?
Have a happy time camping Oz. We have never been. Mind you with all the rain we have been having it would not be fun. Have a marvellous Monday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
Looks like you are all prepared Oz. Food and treats would be big on brown dawgs list. We have that same collapsible bowl. :)
ReplyDeleteYou just have to remember to take yourself :) Mom remembers going camping when she was younger - she always loved it it but these days her creaky old bones just wouldn't enjoy it so much.
ReplyDeleteWow, you definitely seem prepared! I've never been camping. Momma and I are more hotels & room service folks.
ReplyDeleteI want to go camping, pawhaps I can come with you :) xxoxxx
ReplyDeleteMollie and Alfie
Oh, Oz, we are SO jealous. I was just last night wishing for a peaceful night in a tent. But it will be quite a few months before that's possible here (unless we were one of those crazy winter camping people!) This is a great list. We have a similar post in the works; what Cascadian camping pooches need to bring camping can be a bit different. Floatation device is important; I wish I had remembered ours when we drove to Buffalo last summer because the boys missed out on some fun on the pond!
ReplyDeleteHaha I see you belong to the Bring It All Just In Case theory of camping. My mom does too. Dad believes in the Who Needs Clean Underwear theory of camping. Somehow they make it work, guess opposites attract.
ReplyDeleteThey were just saying yesterday that we can probably start camping in 6 weeks (assuming the Polar Vortex has gone home by then). So I'm very jealous Oz. Your pal, Toby
You have ALMOST everythingy covered... butt did you furget to pack some TOYS???
ReplyDeleteHave a super duper time... and bring back LOTS of pictures fur us to see...
Mom went camping a couple of times when she was young, but I have never been. I have stayed in a camper though. It is permanently parked at the cousins' house, as a sort of parents-in-law apartment/suite. BOL! You have an impressive collection of safety orange camping gear Oz!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Pepper
I'm hoping to go camping this year. We have our tent and we've bought a tie-out thingy...we just need some better weather for the peeps to get organised!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are good to go. Now watch out for the gators
ReplyDeleteLily

ReplyDeleteHey Oz
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun time you must have had camping. You know I'm said to be a Diva so should I go camping with you I'd need sparkling water, overhead fan for the heat and to keep the skeeters off my pink nose.
Hugs Madi your finicky BFFF
Wow! Good thing your prepared!!!
ReplyDeleteLook at all that stuff you have!!
((husky hugz frum da pack))
"love is being owned by a husky"
That is a great list Oz, especially the food and bowls MOL!
ReplyDeleteWow...camping sounds like fun!! We have never been (cause we lived in Austin where it is HAWT all the time), now that we live in NorCal Mama keeps talking about RV camping soon, so we will keep your wonderful list handy!!
ReplyDeleteSmileys!

Mom's idea of camping is a cheap hotel. She says to go camping her list would be: her hot spot, laptop, cellphone, dogs, dog gear, car, credit card to charge the hotel room with. I think us dogs would love camping but it is not Mom's thing at all. She loves the outdoors, but she needs a hotel after a day outdoors. You have a fun time. Maybe my sisters and I can camp with you and leave Mom at home?
ReplyDeleteWay to make a checklist and be prepared, Oz. Have fun camping!
ReplyDeleteWe bring a portable, battery operated fan. It helps cut down on the outside noise, for dogs who might not be accustomed to sleeping in tents. :-)
ReplyDeletecan't wait to see your pictures Oz!!
Oz, you are so well prepared! Have fun camping! Me-Ommmmmmm
ReplyDeleteI love camping too, Oz only we are going in a caravan, but we are going in july. Have a nice trip.
ReplyDeleteWOW Oz, enjoy your camping season, looks like you are prepared, Dad says if we went he would have to take a dump truck for all our stuffs!
ReplyDeleteThe Mad Scots
Great post , loved reading this :)
ReplyDeleteBOL, the only camping Mom and I do is in hotels. You've got a great list of stuff, Oz!
ReplyDeleteNola
Good thing your folks have you. Have fun camping.
ReplyDeleteAroo to you,
Sully
I agree, I wants to go campin' with you Oz!!! OMD, that sounds like so much funs!! butts Ma says I would get in too much troubles..PFFFFFT!!! What's wrong with a little 'wildlife' huntin' anyhu?! BOL
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it sure looks like your prepared, and I can't wait to hear all abouts it!!
Oh, and I LOVES the blanket! Nice and thick to make the ground nicer to lay on! (those little rocks can be annoyin'!! BOL)
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
WOW!! You are a pro!! We've never been camping but it sounds like grrrreat fun. Dada is a hiker, maybe we can get him to look into some dog friendly camping / hiking spots for us.
ReplyDeleteWally & Sammy
Oz what fun!! we don't go camping but we would love to on our property! we have tie outs as you call them and here we call them runs..tent pegs long wire strands and a long chain from this to a clip on the collars..we do this when we have to burn off and want the doggies with us but not running through the bush chasing roos!! roos can kill pups! you are well prepared and I am sure will have a blast..look forward to the pics :) hugs Fozziemum and Forrest and Doc xxx
ReplyDeleteWow Oz, this list is wonderful! There are some things on there I don't think I would have thought to take. It's funny that January is good camping season, but I guess that is Florida for you :) I think October is more of camping season here in Texas.
ReplyDeleteI's never gone camping, but it do look like fun!
ReplyDeleteOzzie, honey, how about a first aid kit? A very important thing to have with you, as well as medical records and contact for a local veterinarian and emergency clinic. One might hopefully NEVER need it but it is important to have it.
ReplyDeleteOkay, Jeffie, Rudy and Rosie are seriously jealous - camping! Looks like you're about ready to do, but my three would definitely want to take along a toy or two. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteWe live in Florida too and look forward to seeing where you camp. We use to camp all the time when the kids were younger. I miss it and would like to try again. I'm a big wuss and prefer what my kids call "soft camping" -- there must be flushable toilets and hot showers within walking distance of my tent.
ReplyDeleteLooks to me like you are super prepared. We have all that same stuff, well not the life jacket. Always good to be safe, and prepared.
ReplyDeleteGering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding ~ Oz buddy friend you don't have to rub it in that you have warm weather. I have a wind chill of minus 20. Why I can't stay outside more than five minutes and you get to go camping. Something about these fact don't seem fair!
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a friend
Sweet William The Scot
Goodness that's a lot of gear but it sure looks like fun! Mom is NOT a camper so I doubt I'll ever get to go. Don't you get to bring a ball or toy to play with, a chewy and treats? Those would be first on MY list. Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteSmart list. :) I'm glad to see you're wearing the ClickIt for the ride! The tie out is a good idea too, for when you want to relax and you want to let your dog explore without letting him off lead.
ReplyDeleteMOWZERS! We three never get to go camping. Of course it was -3 here this morning, so that's prolly a GOOD thing right now. Faraday sez he'd take TREATS, a WAND Toy, his blankie and more TREATS.
ReplyDeleteYou are a great dog scout and your stuff looks like it is all in order. Looks like it is really kept up too. My dogs stuff is all grubby from playing in the mud too much. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteOz...haha that last one. A hoodie sweater! Love it love it.
ReplyDeleteWe've never gone camping, Oz, but we'll be sure to refer to your list if Heather and Mr. K ever convince us to go! Much love, The Scottie Mom.
ReplyDeleteVery good advice there Oz my pal…I pe the campin seezum be a good one fur yoo
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're a great planner buddy! The tie-out is a good idea, when we went to Mammoth Mum didn't think of that and had to look after me the whole time....
ReplyDeleteHope you had fun,
Your pal Snoopy :)

I must follow all the above tips during my next tour that I am planning to celebrate the summer vacations with my family and also with my sweet cat from ny to niagara falls bus tour.
