Probably not an escapee...iguanas thrive here in South Florida. They are a very successful non-native species which they think originally got here from South America as stowaways on boats bringing over fruits and veggies. However, they are also popular in the exotic pet trade...that is, until they grow to such lengths! Iguanas are hard to care for and with their size, many people just let them loose here in South Florida to fend for themselves.
They are pretty well established here and when we get cold-ish weather, it usually "rains" iguanas. They love to live in trees and the cold weather puts them in a state of torpor; they lose their grip on the tree and fall to the ground. Once it warms up, they wake up and get back to business.
"Raining" eeeeeeguanas!! That sounds like a nightmare of biblical proportions to me! Eeeessh. I'd have a heart attack if one of those came to my door! Good thing you barked and scared him away!
Oh, my goodness. We have a lot of little lizards around our house, and the dogs are obsessed with chasing them. (Foster dog may have eaten one or two...) I can't even imagine what they'd do if they saw one that big!! Nice job sending him away, Oz!
Bark! Like I did. Ma wouldn't let me outside though. She says iguanas will fight and they have long claws (talons) on their toes and they use their tail as a whip! I barked from behind the safety of the sliding glass!
That thing is incredible. It has the longest tail. Mom says it would scare the pee out of her if that thing came up and knocked on our door. Purrs and paw-pats, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
That is one big lizzard! WOW! I don't know what I would do about him...momma would love him, though! She's already over here looking at that picture and saying 'how cool!'

Oh boy, that would not be good for my mom to find. Better than a snake, but not good. She doesn't even like the tiny geckos! He is pretty cool looking, though.
I had pet iguanas before I became a dog mom. People were surprised what an emotional connection I had with my first one, Emerald. He was my baby and traveled with me to three states.
Looks like that iguana is not too particularly afraid! So funny - we marvel at them on holidays and they're just urban wildlife for you - like squirrels or hares.
