Pet Dental Health Month: Time to Clean Your Canines

February is Pet Dental Health Month and it serves as a great reminder that you should be cleaning your canines all year long.

By the age of 3 years old, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will be diagnosed with Dental Disease. Ain't that a kick in the teeth?  Dental Disease can cause bad breath and loss of teeth but it also can contribute to other serious issues like heart, liver and kidney disease.

There are several ways you can keep your canines clean.  You can:
  • Brush your teeth with a special toothbrush;
  • Chew on special toys and ropes; and
  • Eat special dental treats to help remove the plaque and tartar.

The Kong Company recently sent me some of their Dental products to try.  I received the Kong Dental Rubber & Rope toy and a Kong Fresh Breath Dental Chew treat.

Kong Dental Toy
The KONG Dental toys have special grooves that help clean teeth and gums as dogs chew.  The grooves in the toys can be filled with either KONG Easy Treat (or peanut butter or anything spreadable) to encourage chewing.

The Kong Dental Rubber & Rope toy is made from durable KONG Classic rubber and is available in two sizes, small and medium.  Always made in the U.S.A., the rope part is even replaceable!  This is a super fun toy to chew on or play fetch with AND it will help keep your canines clean!

Kong Dental Chew
Kong Fresh Breath Dental Chews are a delicious way to clean your canines. These chews help fight plaque and tarter buildup as well as inhibit bacterial growth to reduce chances of gum disease.  They are made in the U.S.A and are available in three sizes: small, medium/large and extra-large.

Kong Dental Chews are made with healthy, human-grade ingredients including parsley and alfalfa, a natural source of breath freshening chlorophyll.  The treats do not contain any wheat, soy or corn.  I think they are totally yummy!

Ingredients:
Potato Flour, Rice Flour, Gelatin, Vegetable Glycerin, Pea Protein, Sunflower Oil, Oat Fiber, Calcium Carbonate, Natural Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Ground Flax Seed, Zinc Propionate, Potassium Chloride, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (Stay-C®, Source of Vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Niacin, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, D-calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Sulfate, Folic Acid.

Thank you Kong for helping to keep my canines clean!
Now, everyone grab your Kong - it is time to clean YOUR canines!

  1. Oz you have great teeth! our vet always comments on how great the boys teeth are..at nearly 11 and 12 no plaque! always good bones and a good diet help..no tinned food for the boys here...we found it used to give our much missed Rottie Eich really bad wind..so we took him off and problem solved, he also didn't smell doggy anymore. So these boys have never had it...also Kongs are fab too for those chompers :) hugs Fozziemum x

  14. I've never cleaned Sheba's teeth, luckily good diet, chews, bones and rope toys have kept everything in check, I've heard tripe is supposed to be good. Kong products are great.

  15. So important to have clean teeth! Looks like yours are sparkly white, Oz. Rita's are too - although I rarely brush them. But the right kind of treats, plus an antler now and then, really help!

  20. Spartacus has the saddest teeth imaginable from having Distemper as a puppy. He has "enamel hypoplasia" - in English, his teeth look like icicles dipped in caramel and chocolate. Been that way since we brought him home. So he's getting a professional cleaning at the vet, we just made the appointment! Oz's teeth look brand new!

I'm not a fan of the brushing thing, though I'm all for the toys and I love bones, maybe it's time for Mum to get me some new ones? :)

    I hope you're having a fun day,

  29. What beautiful teeth you have, Oz! Maya and Pierson have the rope dental Kong, but they've never tried the Kong dental chew. They get other good chews, though, and they have great teeth. Pierson's teeth are a little more stained, but that's because he is a poo-poo-head poop-eater. He definitely has to have his teeth brushed every day.

  30. Donna's teeth is just awful and we'd scheduled to being her in for dental scaling. We give her dental chews too but the human is convinced that we need to brush Donna's teeth daily. That makes Donna very sad. : (

  32. How cute! :D I really do want those kind of teeth with my dogs. I'm taking my dog into the vet by tomorrow and to also check him if there are pet parasites in him because I noticed that he is not looking good these past few days. Thanks for this one.
