It is very important to be a Responsible Pet Owner. Most would agree that being a Responsible Pet Owner includes (among other things):
- Committing to the relationship for the life of your pet(s).
- Ensuring your pets are properly identified (i.e., tags, microchips, or tattoos) in case they get lost
- Taking your pets to regular veterinarian visits to maintain their health
- Socializing and training your pet(s), and of course...
- Spending time bonding and playing with your pet(s).
But being a Responsible Pet Owner also means being a responsible member of your community. It means that you care enough about other people and your community to Scoop That Poop and not leave it for others to step in or for it to leach into the groundwater.
Ma loves being a Responsible Pet Owner and she ALWAYS Scoops My Poop. She sees a lot of other Responsible Pet Owners in our neighborhood but she also sees some irresponsible ones too. Which is why we are always on Poop Patrol, flagging unscooped poop with the hopes that some of these people will "take the hint".
The other day, Ma saw something that made her think of yet another way to be a Responsible Pet Owner: a young teen walking his dog before he went to school with a poop bag in hand that he did NOT use to scoop his dog's poop. That's right...he left the poop half on the sidewalk and half on the grass. Just gross.
Being a Responsible Pet Owner also means that you SHARE your LOVE of being RESPONSIBLE with your children. And yes, we are fairly certain that people share those first five characteristics with their kids..."a pet is a pet for its entire life" and "you have to keep your pet healthy"...etc. But what about saying "it is only proper to pick up Buddy's business when you take him for a walk"? And also..."if you scoop it, you carry it to the trash can and properly dispose of it".

DeleteGreat message Oz. I think that a lot of people, especially younger ones, don't even realize that scooping poop is something they should do. It's common knowledge for a lot of us, but maybe not for everyone. I guess that's why you are on poop patrol though!

DeleteWe definitely scoop. I wish I could catch whoever it is in our neighborhood who doesn't scoop in the act. Whoever they are, they have a BIG dog. So gross. And it paints all of us dog owners in a bad light to the folks who don't have dogs and get angry about the poop. Grrrrr! Not scooping and letting their dogs off leash are 2 of my biggest pet peeves in this neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteMiss Jackie, you need to download my Poop Flags (in my Poop Patrol post in Scoop That Poop label). Leave them as little hints...it takes time for the idiots to actually do anything but it helps all the responsible people notice the unscooped poop (and gets them riled up too)!
DeleteHey, where did you get those little signs? I would love to get some. Recently the people around here have become quite irresponsible when it comes to their dogs. There's so much poop at the bark park! I tried cleaning up a lot of it but there was just too much to make much of a difference.

Oh...we have found the bags of poop on the ground. Drives Ma and I NUTS! Seriously, why bother putting it in a plastic bag if you are not going to throw it in the trash bin?!? Honestly...I live in the South and sometimes I think most people here are just dim-witted.

We saw so much unscooped poop on our hike yesterday. We can't understand people who care enough about their dogs to take them on a hike then not picking up after them. Whether on grass, sidewalk, or a trail, humans need to scoop.
ReplyDeleteI once went to visit a friend who had moved to the suburbs/country and we went out to walk our dogs in her new neighborhood. When Tynan pooped, I got out a poop bag and stooped to clean it up. My friends daughter asked what I was doing and my friend told her that picking up dog poop was a thing city people do because there are so many dogs in the city. Sad. I lost touch with that friend but I certainly hope her daughter eventually learned that EVERYONE should scoop that poop no matter where they live!
