Outdoor Gear: Kumfy Tailz Harness

What's warm in the Winter and cool in the Summer?  A Kumfy Tailz Harness!  Since the weather has been getting quite warm down here in South Florida, I have been wearing my Kumfy Tailz harness quite often.

Kumfy Tailz was inspired by hot/cold therapy wraps for humans.  It incorporates patented gel pack technology to deliver either warmth or cooling to a dog.  Kumfy Tailz is the first harness to specifically address canine physiology - targeting our chest and abdominal region where we lose and gain heat most.  That is why the Kumfy Tailz harness is a bit longer than most harnesses; it covers your entire belly for optimum cooling/warming.

I wore my Kumfy Tailz harness when we were out in Big Cypress National Preserve, when we went biking along Lake Okeechobee and even when we recently went camping!  It is super easy to get on and it is a sturdy harness with a d-ring for your leash, great for hiking or just lounging around.

How does Kumfy Tailz work?
Like I said, it is super easy.  You just warm or cool the Kumfy Pax and place it in the Kumfy Pouch in the harness.  You put your warm or cool harness on and off you go!

The Kumfy Pax is a puncture-resistant nylon/pvc packet filled with gel that can be warmed in the microwave or cooled in your freezer.  After about an hour in the freezer (or less than a minute in the microwave), the Kumfy Pax is ready.

On our recent adventures, we kept the Kumfy Pax in the cooler filled with ice.  We took it straight from the freezer to the cooler and it stayed pretty cold.  When I needed to cool down, it did the job perfectly.

Even better, you won't get all wet when wearing the Kumfy Tailz to cool down.  The Kumfy Pouch is made of a special material which is designed to prevent condensation from reaching your skin.  This is great for me because I hate being wet!

Get Your Own Kumfy Tailz
Kumfy Tailz harnesses come in several colors including black, blue, red and pink.  There are 5 sizes of Kumfy Tailz, from XX-small to Large, and sizing is important.  The website has a great sizing chart and instructions on how to measure yourself for the perfect fit.  The harness retails for about $39.95 and it comes with 1 Kumfy Pax.  You can purchase additional Kumfy Pax separately (I have two so I can switch them out if needed).

If you enjoy being outside during the hot days of Spring and Summer, or even the cooler days of Fall and Winter, then you should definitely consider getting a Kumfy Tailz.  It will help you stay at a comfortable temperature any time of year.

When would you wear a Kumfy Tailz harness?
Do you think you could use it on your next adventure?

  2. You know that is something to consider. The heat isn't as much of an issue but cold packs could be quite helpful.

  5. That's a pretty neat idea. Black-coated Jimmy really suffers in the summer sun/heat.

it's a great idea to add a gel packet to a harness and without getting wet, wow! I'm not really the guy for a harness because of my deep chest, what makes it difficult to wear a harness. but it's a super idea, specially in summer! 4 paws for Kumfy tailz harness!

  8. Ding Dong Sweet William calling ~ Why that is interesting. Being black I do seem to over heat on our walks in the summer. They should make a nice plaid print for Scots. Lee says she is going to check this one out!
    Thanks for being a friend

  12. that looks like a great idea - I am always worried about the boyos over heating.....but.....does it matt the fur? does it feel bulky between their legs....I have visions of them walking like they have a diaper on in front :) And does it chafe ...Denny has a problems with harnesses chafing his - don't know why..I guess his skin in sensitive...have tried all kinds on his at the moment he has one that is wrapped in lambs wool but it is hot on him

    1. OK...1) No, it doesn't matte the fur, at least not mine because my fur is thinner on my belly than on my back. 2) I didn't walk like it was bulky or anything...it is a bit thicker (as in deeper off the belly) than a regular harness because of the pocket but it isn't wider or uncomfortable...3) It didn't chafe me at all. It doesn't squirm around like other harnesses tend to do. This is a breathable material as well...sort of a mesh, if you will...but the pocket where the cooling pack goes is lined.

  13. We only wear a harness in the car (our seat belts) or when working (nose work or tracking). Those harnesses are all special designs for their purpose. We have our Kool Kollars for when it is hot out, they are a bit like your harness except we can put real ice in there if we want. Stay cool, my furfriend!

    1. I saw the cool collars Emma, but I think the problem was they didn't come in my size. The harness works well for me and I am glad you all have something to keep you cool as well.

  29. We won one of these last year, and I used it for Kobi during the summer to keep him cooler. I never did try it in the winter, but the cold doesn't really seem to bother our dogs much. I will have to get that out again for this summer, if it ever gets hot!
