Happy Limerick Day!
My good friend Ranger the Scottie was good enough to inform me that today is Limerick Day. I thought that May 12 was an odd time to celebrate limericks and then I learned that Limerick Day was created to celebrate the birthday of Edward Lear.
Edward Lear popularized the limerick poem in his "Book of Nonsense". It is a collection of limericks published in 1846.
Since I love writing and reading limericks, I thought it would be fun to host a little Happy Limerick Day Contest. Everyone is welcome to enter...whether you can write a good limerick or not! I have a prize for the writer of the limerick that makes me laugh the hardest!
Just post your limerick to your blog and then link your post in the Blog Hop, so I can read them all. If you visit other limerick posts, you can "like" them by clicking "like" under their post thumbnail in the Hop linky. You can like as many as you wish. I am thinking that I will offer an additional prize to the "Fan Favorite".
So...get your rhyming hats on and get posting! The hop will be open until the end of day on Thursday (May 15) and I will announce the winner(s) on Friday (May 16).
I'll leave you with one of Edward Lear's limericks for inspiration.
Book of Nonsense Limerick 13 by Edward Lear
There was an Old Man of Kilkenny,
Who never had more than a penny;
He spent all that money,
In onions and honey,
That wayward Old Man of Kilkenny.
Poetry Notes:
"Book of Nonsense Limerick 13" by Edward Lear falls into the public domain - the legal and moral space in which intellectual and artistic material is no longer considered privately, but rather collectively owned (lifetime of the artist plus 70 years): a common social resource, free to be reprinted and transmitted without limitation or constraint.
