Oh my dog. Pet360 has asked me to contribute to a great program titled "60 Reasons Why Life with Dogs is Best".
Have you seen it?
There are 60 great stories in five different categories: Dog Nutrition, Dog Travel, Dog Health, Dog Adoption and Dog Fun. Dogs everywhere know life is best with us around so I barked, "Only 60 reasons? Don't you think there are more than 60 reasons why life with dogs is best?"
I should have kept my big yap shut. Pet360 replied,
"Oh, you think you know more, Oz?
Well, give us one more reason why life with dogs is best for our Dog Health category." And so it was Dr.
Oz the Terrier to the rescue!
Another Great Reason Why Life with Dogs is Best:
Dogs remind their owners that allergies are
nothing to sneeze at.
I speak from experience that we dogs help remind our owners
about how important it is to stay alert when it comes to allergies, as well as
remind them how important it is to take their allergy medicine. I know because I have several allergies.
Many of you know that I am allergic to chicken, so Ma has
always had to be careful and check the ingredients in my food. She was used to doing that already for
herself because she is allergic to certain fruits and vegetables. No salad with mango dressing or salsa for Ma
unless she wants to suffer through an itchy mouth and throat.
"Remember, don't order anything with mango in it." |
My food allergy is why I am on a single-protein diet, so Ma
can make sure I never get chicken. I
know some dogs can be allergic to other ingredients which is why they may be on
limited-ingredient diets.
But...I also have seasonal allergies to certain grasses and
pollens. During my allergy season, I
need to take my allergy medicine regularly or I break out into a terrible rash
which is very itchy. Ma has seasonal
allergies too and sometimes she thinks she can get away with not taking her
medicine.
However, I am a great reminder as to why you should take
your medicine! You see, if I don't get
my medicine for just one day during allergy season, my rash gets really bad and
infected (because I scratch it)...then I need to be on antibiotics too. No one wants their allergies to make them
more sick, so it is just best to take your medicine properly.
So, that's another Reason Why Life with Dogs is
Best...Reason 61. Dogs remind their owners that allergies are
nothing to sneeze at. This dog believes
it is best to be alert, avoid potential allergens and take your medicine, so
you can be happy and healthy.

Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Helloooo Oz ~ I am glad you know what you allergy is, why it would be crackers to go through life scratching and digging and never knowing. You do such good work telling us about products that might help us. I am a lucky dog I will be four soon and have not developed any allergies yet. You know I don't even lick my feet. I am in a medical study, well what Lee swabbed out of both my cheeks is in the study. I think part of the study has to do with why dogs lick there feet a lot.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a friend
Sweet William The Scot
Hmmm, interesting medical study Sir William! I lick my feet a lot...but I think it is because I am allergic to the grass and my feets get itchy. I would love to hear more about that study though and what they find out!
DeleteFantastic! A great way to spread the word on important issues
ReplyDeleteLily & Edward
Thanks Lily & Edward. I try.
DeleteOH Oz look at you sitting there waiting to order so debonair! I hope and purr I never develop an allergy to seafood....
ReplyDeleteit is my favorite...I will do just about anything for Fancy Feast Classic Seafood.
We pets are good for our peeps health too.
hugs madi your bfff
We are definitely good for our peeps health...in so many ways! Why, I hope you never get an allergy to seafood either. The poor cat that would be allergic to fishes.
DeleteI would say there are hundreds of reasons that dogs are great.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, Mary!
DeleteThat was a fabulous post and I bet the whole carnicore world has only one word: BRAVO! I'm allergic to some grasses too, fortunately it's only a seasonal allergy. But it can be annoying and sometimes painful too. I will visit the slideshow now, have a super tasty tuesday, Oz.
ReplyDeleteGrass allergy is terrible, Easy. We have to walk in it to do our business but it makes us itch. So not fair.
DeleteWe are lucky Oz to be allergy free but one of our friends has just started showing signs and the vets are looking into it. No fun at all. Have a terrific Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
You are lucky, Molly. Allergies are no fun at all...you are right about that. I sure hope your friend's allergies turn out to be minor.
DeleteI haz chek on da typist Oz my pal….seem he is allergic to ard werk….BOL
ReplyDeleteBOL! I don't think there is a medicine for that, Marley.
DeleteWhat a great post OZ! Mama and Arty both have seasonal allergies and have to takes medicine efurryday too!!
ReplyDeleteSmileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
Oh, so Ma and I are not alone! Your poor Mama and Arty...I feel for them.
DeleteI would say that you did darn good telling them like it is Oz!
ReplyDeleteBOL Brian! You know I have a hard time keeping this terrier trap shut sometimes.
DeleteOf course we loved the Pug one where that little guy was stolen from his daddy....it is sad but I still don't believe he is home yet. We finks Margaret may have a seasonal allergy starting cos she is biting on one of her legs at night. we are going to keep a watch on her.
ReplyDeletestella rose
Oh, chewing on a paw or leg to fight the itchies can be a first sign, Stella Rose. Keep a close eye on Margaret.
DeleteThat was awesome Oz, you are the best Dr. Oz and have such great information and pictures. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you Miss JoAnn.
DeleteMommy wants ta know if you can tell US to help her with the allergies. She's sneezin' her HEAD OFF. (Yeah, she mowed the grass the other day, d'oh!) MOL!!
ReplyDeleteWay ta go Doc Oz!!
What? Why did she mow the grass if she is allergic? You need to bark at her when she is starting to do that to tell her NO!
DeleteMr Reilly too is allergic to Chicken - on fact all types of poultry so we have to be sooooo careful with his food. When we took Reilly to a doggie allergy specialist - he tasted positive for 98 of the 100 allergens. Mom is allergic to any kind of pepper, sweet, spicy, black etc. It makes eating out really hard as most restaurants put pepper on everything.
ReplyDeleteChicken allergy for a dog is horrible...because chicken is a top ingredient in so many foods and treats. Ma is always looking at ingredient lists. I bet you are too. And being allergic to all kinds of peppers...my ma would be so upset. She loves peppers!
DeleteEven when its stressful we get the Dog Parents to laugh, smile, and play. That is an important job.
ReplyDeleteBailey, that is so true. And it is very important that we do that for our parents' health.
DeleteEXCELLENT JOB of Sayin it like it IS buddy. EXCELLENT.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys!
DeleteThat was great Oz!!!! WOnderful job at finding another reason why dogs are great!!!
ReplyDeleteღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
It wasn't hard...there are so many things that make life with dogs the best! I cannot believe they only had 60. BOL
DeleteWhat do you take for your allergies Oz? You probably told me but I can't remember. I am not suppose to have any poultry either, sometimes a little is okay. But we tried a food with chicken meal in it and I got sick so we avoid that for sure. Nutro sounds like a great food for dogs like us! Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteI don't remember if we discussed this already or not Dolly...so it's not just you. BOL I take Benadryl twice a day...but the vet says we dogs can take it up to 3 times a day. We tend to metabolize Benadryl faster than humans. It doesn't make me sleepy or anything and it sure helps take away the itchies so I do not scratch and chew myself into an infection.
DeleteUsually at the beginning of my allergy season, I end up on prescription medicine (if Ma doesn't catch my allergies right away) - Temaril - it is an antihistamine with a wee bit of steroid in it. I take a low dose and only for a short period of time and it really helps gets things under control - stops the itch, reduces swelling from scratching, etc. Then I just go back to my Benadryl and that works for the remainder of the season.
Chicken allergy just sucks, Dolly. I feel you on that. Nutro does have limited-ingredient that does NOT contain chicken...just in case you were wondering.
Great post OZ. You know that I have allergies and it has helped me a lot to be on limited ingredient food. Since it was about this time last year that my allergies surfaced Mom is watching carefully to see what I do. I would like to know also what medication you take.
ReplyDeletehugs
Greta
Bailey & Hazel too
Greta...like I just mentioned to Dolly, I take Benadryl twice a day though a dog can take it 3 times a day if necessary. We metabolize it quicker than humans and it is safe for us. It sure helps relieve my itchiness and rash break outs. Usually at the beginning of the season, when Ma doesn't catch my allergies right away, I end up on prescription medicine for about 1 week. I get Temaril - an antihistamine with a touch of steroid in it - to reduce rash swelling, get rid of itching, etc. Then I go back on Benadryl.
DeleteWow! Maybe I should just right a post about what I take for my allergies. :-)
Oz, you did a pawsome job! I am just putting the finishing howls on mine for Thursday. Imagine that they chose me for fun...such a boring life we lead! We always love reading your posts as they are fun and you are so cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks Emma! I cannot wait to see your additional reason for Dog Fun! I know you will rock that topic!
DeleteThat is a great post. I am allergic to mango too and it seems like just everything is mango these days.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding, especially here in South Florida because everyone wants to make a "tropical" flavored dish. Ugh!
DeleteI have allergies too Oz! I have to take the Benadryl lots. Luckily, it doesn't make me sleepy like it can in most doggies (though, Ma, for some reason, wishes this was not true! pfffft!)
ReplyDeleteGreat postie! I learn so much from you Oz!
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
You and me both Ruby...we are the Benadryl terriers! BOL It doesn't make me sleepy either but it sure helps with the itchies and rashes!
DeleteI must have missed the email for this campaign because I don't remember seeing it! Regardless, great tips Oz. Too bad your mom can't have salsa since it's so delish. Pineapple makes my tongue itchy, so my veterinarian told me I was allergic to it when I was like 24 lol. I still like to eat it though, but not too much otherwise it will get really itchy!
ReplyDeleteYou? Miss an email Miss Ann? Never! Ma cannot have lots of fruits and veggies including apples, pears (her favorite), peaches, plums...ah, the list goes on and on. Ma says she still like to eat pears like you like to eat pineapple but then she can only have a bite or she will itch, itch, itch.
DeleteWoofs to you Dr. OZ. Sugar can relate to allergies. Sugar is being extra careful cause she is a senior dog and we have eliminated major medications. Her time to be on grassy area is a bit limited and she wears her boots at all times. Oh she get lots lots of baths which she don't mind at all. We know you get lots of baths too :-) We can't believe your mom is allergic to mango. Golden Woofs to you and your mom :-)
ReplyDeleteI know my Sugar has allergies too...some just like mine! The grass allergy is the worst for our paws. I am so glad you introduced us to PawZ boots to protect our paws from the grass. And yes, during allergy season I get lots of baths...and you know I hate them. :-)
DeleteWe're sorry to hear you've got allergies Oz but it's good that your Mom knows how to feed you to keep you right.
ReplyDeleteLuv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
Yes, it was like I was meant to be Ma's doggie since she has allergies and so do I!
DeleteSo many reasons why life is great with dogs! Loved your post!
ReplyDeleteThere are, aren't there? Thank you so much for visiting!
