Fear not, friends.
The great and powerful Oz the Terrier has been through Hurricane Season
before. As we say, hurricanes are the
price we pay for living in paradise here in South Florida.
That said, there are a lot of things we need to do this
month to be prepared. What's that? Shouldn't I be prepared already? Well, just because June 1 marks the start of
Hurricane Season doesn't mean a storm is going to form right away.
Besides, as of yesterday, May 31 it is Florida's Hurricane
Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. That
means we get to go shopping for hurricane supplies - like batteries,
flashlights, lanterns, tarps, weather radios, etc - and pay no tax through June
8. (This is to encourage people to buy
stuff EARLY - which a lot of people don't do - but we do!)
It's odd though because while unprepared food is tax exempt
in Florida year-round, pet food never is. But...the National Weather Service thinks it
would be wise to offer it tax-free before hurricane season so maybe one day,
pet food will be part of the Sales Tax Holiday.
We pets need to eat during and after a storm too, you know!
So, this month you may find me telling you about some of our
preparations for hurricane season. It's
a big deal here and I bet it could be helpful to others, even if you are never
in the "Cone of Death", as we call it.
Anyway, I was very glad to see that my name was not used for
a hurricane this year! I always check
that...I would hate for my good name to be associated with a terrible storm. You may want to check and see if your name is
on there.
Are you a potential Hurricane this year?
You are so cool and no hurricane is going to hit you. Hope you have a very safe hurricane season. Interesting about no sales tax on supplies bought during that time. Never heard of that before. Have a great Sunday.
ReplyDeleteYou know Mom was just pondering over this issue just the other day - she was trying to think of the "perfect' state to live in - but it seems it is either hurricanes, tornado's, snow, cold, heat fires etc seem to hit all the states.
ReplyDeleteOz we forget how lucky we are here with no snakes to speak of, no gators and no hurricanes. We are really very lucky.
ReplyDeleteHave a serene Sunday and let us all partake of some big easy today.
Best wishes Molly
Perhaps there is no tax holiday for pet food because you can eat steak!
ReplyDeleteI always a potential hurricame. We just never get them here in Arizona. What we do get is tax on all food (a head of lettuce? pay tax) in some municipalities and and others tax apartment rents (say what?).
ReplyDeleteOur paper put out a Hurricane Guide this weekend too!!! None of our names are on the list but we remember the year Fay hit here....there were people water skiing down our street!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids
I'm shocked Bailie isn't on the list as she is a hurricane! Glad to see you are tied down already so you don't blow away! Stay safe and hopefully there won't be any bad storms! PS: Love those shades!
ReplyDeleteBe safe in those scary hurricanes! Wooooowoooooooooooo!
ReplyDeleteOh crap please tell me you are making the list up? Hurricane Dolly really? How could you name a hurricane Dolly? To add insult to injury mom's name is Sandra as in Hurricane Sandy! Glad you are prepared. Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteOur big guy is an Arthur and Lady's great grandfather was a Wilfred. The big guy is a hurricane, so it seems fitting! We don't know much about these storms not living in the part of the world effected, but we are glad you can get supplies without taxes. Stay safe and we hope the season is mild.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing we have here is when I say Can you Hurry that Can quicker coz I'mz starving..BOL Stay safe Oz xxoxxxxx
ReplyDeleteMollie and Alfie
Whew...no hurricane named after any of us this year either!!
ReplyDeleteSmileys!
Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo
I heard on the news that this year they are predicting FAR LESS hurricanes than the norm (lucky for you!) Something about the weather pattern, could it be El Nino? No hurricanes here in Michigan but we are in the height of tornado season.
ReplyDeletePheeww Neither no hurricane named after us. Sniff from Laika and Vaks.
ReplyDeleteWe think a hurricane should definitely be named after Jan but ... sigh, none is. And we're not on the list either.
ReplyDeleteGood idea to be prepared. Hope they won't have to use any names.
ReplyDeleteGrrrrrreat post Oz. EVERYBUDDY needs to be prepared fur Weather and OTHER stuffs like Earthquakes. THIS will be an EXCELLENT series.
ReplyDeleteWe think that the No Tax time fur Emergency Supplies is WONDERFUL.... If just a FEW MORE FOLKS would get there stuffs EARLY... some folks would not be left Without.. Bravo to the State fur Doing it... BUTT we AGREE that they should include Dog and Cat food and Cat Litter too.
Yay, no hurricanes in our household! I'm glad that you get prepared ahead of time, Oz. We don't have to worry too much up here in NH, but when there is one coming, everyone is shopping at the last minute!

Good to be prepared OZ. We do not have hurricanes, but sometimes the wind blows really hard. And we actually had a tornado about a week ago just 30 or so miles from us. Luckily it stayed in a farm field and no damage.

Mr Bailey, Hazel & Greta
We're glad we don't live where there are hurricanes.
ReplyDeleteWe hope those hurricanes just hurry right on by you Oz!
ReplyDeleteHope ya don't get no hurricanes dis year!
ReplyDeleteMomma says I are always a potential hurricane, but my name are not on da list, BOL BOL!
We are very happy to see you are well prepared
ReplyDeleteLily & Edward
Oh, that is some very important stuffs Oz!!! Here in California, we have earthquake guides and we gots to be prepared for them too! Pretty much the same thing, just no life vest required!! (well, unless the coast falls into the pacific..butts no worries! We'll then have beach front property!! BOL)
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Ruby ♥
Living here in Canada, we don't have hurricanes or even tornadoes (very very rare for a small tornado to even hit)
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are prepared, and thanks for sharing your tips!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
This is how we handle hurricane season over in our burg of St. Pete: get batteries, get lots of water, practice drinking cold coffee and warm beer (for just a little while), get lots of snacks (some nutritious), eat the snacks, go back for more upon notice of another Hurricane.
ReplyDeleteIt's scary to see in the news the devastation of a hurricane. It is important to be prepared. Hey Oz, we got the same emergency flashlight. Golden Woofs
ReplyDeleteWow, tax-free pet food! It's nice to see pets getting included in plans now. We don't have hurricanes where I live, but we do have tornadoes, so we have an emergency kit too!
ReplyDeleteWe fortunately have no hurricanes here. It's scary what power such hurricanes and tornados can have and I always cross my paws for the peeps and the pets who live in that areas. I agree with you, it's a good idea to sell taxfree petfood once, hope it will be established once. Please stay safe and I hope all people will be well prepared.
ReplyDeleteHey Oz...oh yes here in NC as in FL we don't look forward to hurry-cane season....and it is soooooo long.
ReplyDeleteMy human sis and BIL live on NC's coast so mom is always antsy about storms.
Hugs madi your bfff
PS lovin' those yellow shades
ReplyDeleteMadi
I'm scared of hurricanes and tornadoes, because we don't have catastrophic weather in Sweden, so I'm not used to it.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are pretty bad at preparing too, but when the news say a storm is coming I do stock up on water, human foods that won't spoil, and dry dog food. We have lots of flashlights. Should prolly get a weather radio, but every time I think about that they're sold out, lol.
We haven't been hit by an actual hurricane since I've been here, but a problem with some of the tropical storms is letting the doggies out to potty. Topper won't go outside if it's raining, and he'll hold it until he's almost bursting, poor thing.
Great topic, Oz!
=) Maria
What happened to Q, U, X, Y, and Z? Hope your season is hurricane free!
ReplyDeletestay safe Oz!
