Petfinder's 5 Alternatives to Leaving Your Dog in the Car

It was about this time last year that I wrote A Sad Reminde rof Summer Pet Safety - a post about two South Florida dogs who died after their owner left them in a hot car while he went to take some kind of exam.  Oh and yes...he was charged with two counts of animal cruelty.

Seriously, it is already piping, steaming hot here; it probably is the same by you.  So it is a perfect time to remind everyone to NOT leave their pets locked in the car while they go about their day-to-day business.

Petfinder has this great infographic - 5 Alternatives to Leaving Your Dog in the Car.  I think it provides some great options so I thought I would share it.

Personally, Ma and I think that if you are running errands you should just leave your dog home...in the air conditioning...and she has told that to some not-so-nice people she has seen in parking lots with their dogs locked in the hot car.

Can you think of another alternative to leaving your dog in the car?

  1. it is one of the things that drives us crazy around here....people are always leaving dogs in the car and Mom is ALWAYS leaving the safety posters on windsceens. Last year we called the police 3 times. And just as bad - people driving around with their dogs unteethered in the back of trucks - we have already seen one dog fall out and luckily he wasn't hurt but he sure could of been

  5. OK, not sure why, but my comments are not going through ...trying one more time. I can't believe how similar our moms are. That's really funny! You know this means ...I think your mom better get busy writing your memoirs like Pip's book!

P.S: Maybe you can give me some tips on ways to get my mom to blog more. She has been hopelessly distracted lately.

  6. Errands? The only permissible errand is a trip to the dog food store and you don't have to do that. You can get everything online!

  8. MOM SAYS IF SHE LIVES TO 100 SHE WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND HOW ANY ONE COULD THINK IT WAS OK TO LEAVE A PET OR CHILDREN IN A CAR. AND YET EACH YEAR IT HAPPENS OVER AND OVER WITH CHILDREN AND PETS.STUPID STUPID STUPID. WE JUST HAD A DAD ARRESTED FOR LEAVING 3 CHILDREN IN A VAN WITH THE WINDOWS UP....AND NOT LONG AGO WHEN EXITING A CAFE MOM SAW ANIMAL CONTROL BLOCK A CAR IN A PARKING SPOT WAITING FOR THE OWNER TO COME OUT. GRANTED THE WINDOWS WERE DOWN PARTIALLY BUT THE CAR WAS BLACK AND PARKED RIGHT IN THE SUN IT WAS 95 DEGREES.
OK MOM IS STEPPING OFF HER SOAP BOX!!

  10. I love that picture of the snuggly golden in bed! For obvious reasons.
The first thing we check about a place we wanna go is if it's dog-friendly!

  11. In the summer we just stay home a lot, going out is too hot and risky. Luckily in MN, there are plenty of cool months where we can ride along.

  12. We don't travel much in the summer. When we do if it's not a place Mom and Dad feel comfortable leaving the car open with no humans to protect dog and car, then one runs the errand while the other stays with us. Sometimes we get out, sometimes it is cool enough with the windows down, and sometimes they even leave the A/C on if its going to be a quick errand.

  13. I love this graphic - terrific suggestions, and it's a great way to remind everyone without the broken record of "don't leave your pet in your car". Thank you!! Here's hoping we don't have a repeat of last summer.

  14. I write cruelty tickets to indignant owners who leave dogs in locked cars all the time.

My alternative to leaving a dog in the car? Amazon.com! Seriously, shop online and use the extra time to play with the pups. Or take a family nap. Yep, love the naps.

  15. Your exactly right!!! The only time my huskies come in the truck with us is when we are going to visit someone, and are going straight to their house, or if we are taking the huskies to the dog park, and things like that. Leave your dog home!!!!!!!!

  18. Lady is working on a plan for when Lady is traveling alone with Phod this summer. They have a 9 hour trip, and Lady will have to stop a couple times. She is thinking of taking both sets of keys and leaving a running car.

  19. That was good Oz. Number 6 is don't let idiots have dogs.

  20. Those are great tips to save a pet's life. We leave the boys at home in the air conditioning. Not only is leaving your dog in the car dangerous because of the heat, but someone could steal them! I wouldn't leave Bentley alone in the car for a minute! EVER!

  21. We usually stay home, too, but our humans do a lot of the things on that list for us, too, when we do go. And they also have been known to leave the car locked and running with the a/c on for us when they're just running in someplace for a quick purchase.

  22. Those are some nice ideas Oz. I don't like driving anywhere in my car anyways because it has no AC... so they at home idea looks best to me lol.

It's so sad that we have to see that every year. My mom saw 4 people who went in the grocery store (4!) while their dog was in the car and it was darned hot! Mom called them back but they ignored her, so mom informed the lady at the checkout and she promised to act.

  25. GREAT post, Oz! We just can't seem to remind people of this enough, so I shared on all of my social media too. We just leave our dogs home....they are homebodies and happy for that anyway. If we want to get them out we just take them for a ride to go for a walk or a swim, or just go for a ride! There's just no reason they have to come with us to run errands.

If you're going to be leaving your dog for a while, take her to doggie day care or get a dog sitter.

People should test it themselves. Get in the car, leave a/c off, close the windows, and sit for 10 to 20 minutes. See what happens. Oh, and don't drink water or have food.

  27. That's so sad about those poor dogs in Florida! It makes me sad and sick. Thanks for finding this great infographic. I'll definitely be sharing it!

  28. That is a great info graphic, thank you for sharing, I could just scream each time I see a dog in the car with the window cracked a little bit. Grrrrhhhh

  29. We don't bring our dogs with us to do errands. I also worry about people stealing my dogs if I left them in the car. Well maybe not Storm. :) Great info graphic.
