Every year a mated pair of mourning doves makes their nest
somewhere in our yard and this year is no different. They came back again and I think they made
their nest up on our roof since we really didn't see them much.

But now, their babies are fledglings and they have been
hanging out on my back patio for the last couple of days until their wings are
strong enough for them to fly away. I
have been guarding them against the feral cats as well as some of the other
birds who want to come and bother them.
Their momma is still keeping an eye on them and feeding them
2-3 times a day. When Ma goes out there,
they move away from her but they do not go far.
It's like they know we are watching over them and will not harm them. Nature is so cool!

ReplyDeleteOh how pretty! I think Chewy mangled a fledgling this week. We have a pair which hangs out here every year and the Aussies never give them the time of day, but Chewy is a mighty hunter. Poor little things.

Very cool! Very nice of you to give them their space and be patient until they can fly! I volunteer at a wildlife rehab centre, and we get lots of calls from people who would want the birds moved in this kind of situation. :/

ReplyDeleteWe love the birds that come back each year. We have a pair of doves too but we have never seen any babies. When the killdeer used to come every year we had little baby killdeers running around, it was so cool!

ReplyDeleteThey picked the right house to hang out at. Around here they wouldn't have a chance with cats, dogs, and Mom doesn't like birds nesting around our deck because they make a big mess. They are pretty to look at, though.

ReplyDeleteWe have baby birds, squirrels, chipmunks and now a groundhog all hanging out in our yard. I have to walk outside ahead of time to scare them all away before I take the dogs out. And even then, I have to keep them leashed for the first 5 minutes or so, until the yard is cleared. I wish the young critters would hurry up and learn to be more cautious.

We have lots of baby birds in our yard too. Our pawrents love to watch them and don't let us chase them.

DeleteVery cool! We had a nest of some little song birds under our eaves just last week. It was so fun to listen to them chirp "Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!" every time Momma would come home with a snack. Every time we'd hear that, we'd say, "Mommas' home!" They were up so high I didn't get a very good picture of them, but they sure were cute!

About 87 years ago when I still lived with my parents, they had a bird's nest on our porch and near our front door. I'm not sure why the bird thought that was a good spot, since we were coming in and out all of the time, but that's where she built it! The mama bird laid a few eggs, but she didn't stick around long. I guess us coming and going all the time upset her and she left before the eggs ever hatched. I don't think they ever actually did hatch after that, and eventually my dad took the nest down and disposed of it.
