4 Little Extras to Keep Your Dog Healthy #GetHealthyHappy

"It's the little details that are vital.  Little things make big things happen."

Little extras make for happy dogs

It's time again for Dr. Oz the Terrier...talking to you today about some little extras that can help keep your dog healthy as part of the Hill's Science Diet "Healthier Pets. Happier Lives." campaign.

What do I mean by "little extras"?  The little extras are those special moments that allow you to bond with your dog.  These moments provide your dog with the mental stimulation and fulfillment that they need to lead a healthy, happy life.  Happy dogs are healthy dogs.

Healthy dogs are happy dogs

What are some "little extras"?  They are the things you do every day to pamper your dog.  Here are 4 Little Extras that you probably do with your dog already:

Play.  Dogs love to play and we especially love when we play with you, our owners.  Whether it's a game of fetch, tug, my favorite - Chase Around the Table, or even playing with puzzle games, the time you spend having fun provides your dog with needed physical and mental exercise that will keep him happy and healthy.  Be sure to mix things up - don't put all the toys out at once; rotate them so your dog does not become bored.

Treats.  Healthy treats = healthy rewards.  Every dog deserves a healthy reward every now and again and what dog is going to turn his nose up at a yummy treat?  Just make sure dog treats are given in moderation and are not the only reinforcement for a "job" well done because too many treats can be unhealthy.

Grooming.  OK...so you know I am not a fan of the dreaded b-a-t-h but a little brushing isn't bad.  Brushing actually feels good and can be relaxing; a perfect moment to bond with your dog.  Besides, brushing reduces shedding and helps dogs maintain their healthy skin and coat.  There's nothing like being and looking healthy.

Love.  Love is...a pat on the head, a scratch of the ears, a belly rub, a cuddly hug, the silly songs you sing to us (or is my Ma the only nut who sings made-up songs to me?)...you get the idea.  As pack animals, dogs enjoy being connected to others within their pack.  It is one of the best ways to keep us happy and healthy.

To celebrate these Little Extras, Hill's Science Diet is letting me give away two (2) bundles of goodies so you and your pet parent can share special moments and bond with each other.  There is a giveaway for dogs and a giveaway for cats!

  12. Mom always gives us some good hugs and ear rubs everyday and of course we get treats too. We are missing Greta so much, she kept everybody busy. Greta & Hazel played and chased alot, mom is trying to fill the void, but like kyla said, she is not too good at bitey face.

  13. I have five Treeing Walker Coonhounds and three cats - all rescues. I do my best to give each of them some one-on-one time every day, but also play with them as a group (well, at least the dogs, who I play with in our yard or in the house or taking them for walks, although I typically have to limit it to two or three dogs at once on each walk). The cats are okay with each other, but typically don't interact at play time, so I do have to play with them individually. I love getting treats and new toys for my bunch. I also make homemade treats for the dogs. Sweet potatoes are on sale at our local grocery this week, so I bought a couple that I'm going to use in making dog cookies for my pack. They love them!

  17. Since we've started clicker training with Luke, I think those 10 minutes per day my hubby and I each spend working with him is really increasing our bond! We do all of those other things as well with all of the dogs (the cats mostly get love because they don't like to play much!)
We've love to win the cat bundle, since the cats haven't gotten many chances to win anything lately!
