I was so excited when Ma said she was going to make me some Sweet Potato Chips from the new Canine Cooking recipe book I received from PawStreet Barkery.
There are all kinds of DELISH recipes in this book including salads, cookies, muffins, cupcakes and dinners. At first, I thought Ma would try baking one of the fabulous cookie recipes but she is not the greatest baker so she opted to try an easy recipe for my first treat from the book.
SWEET POTATO CHIPS
from Canine Cooking by Shawn Sherry
1) Preheat the oven to 325 F.
2) Wash the sweet potatoes (2) and put them on the cutting board. Cut them into thin slices.
(Ma used a knife and cut them thin; next time she will try cutting them on the mandolin to get them even thinner.)
3) Put the slices onto a baking sheet and bake them for about 30 minutes.
4) Turn them over and put them back into the over for another 30 minutes or until they feel crunchy.
5) Take them out of the oven and let them cool.
(Ma sprinkled a tiny bit of cinnamon sugar on a few of them - they were like dessert chips! On a few other chips, Ma had sprinkled some rosemary during the second half of baking - they were savory!)
These chips can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days or can be stored in the freezer for up to 1 month.
If you did not know, I love sweet potatoes and I love crunchy and these chips are crunchy! I could not eat just one. I cannot wait to try even more of the recipes from Canine Cooking from Paw Street Barkery...I just need to convince Ma that she can bake! I'll keep you posted.

those sound so good - Mom would love them. Dweeb not so much - sweet potato makes him barf everywhere....weird we know...but he can't anything with sweet potato in it.

ReplyDeleteOh, we do that-we just finished a batch on Sunday. We use a mandolin-perfect. We skip the oven and use the de-hydrater and it works well. The chips are never burned. I only get one entry because i REFUSE to facebook.

ReplyDeleteI have five Treeing Walker Coonhounds and three cats - all rescues. I love giving them treats, but it's sometimes hard to find just the kind of treats I want to give them. I avoid things like corn and wheat, and love adding coconut oil and other good things for them. What better way to know just what they are getting - and be able to add my own touches - than making my own treats? I'd love this cookbook so I could try new recipes and have them all handy in one place.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE one of these cookbooks! I don't cook for myself very often, and even less so for my boys since I'm pretty rushed on time. However, I think it would be wonderful to know what ingredients I'm putting in a recipe for the chi's and being able to make small adjustments if necessary.
ReplyDeleteMy sisters would love those! I don't care for sweet potatoes and when I eat them they don't sit well with me. As you know, though, we bake plenty of other treats though.

They look deeeelicious!!! Mom loves sweet potato too so we're not sure how many of those chips we'd end up getting and she'd end up eating *BOL*.
ReplyDeleteMom does bake for us, she has a pawsome pup cake recipe with cream cheese icing (frosting) that she makes for us for our birthdays and she also has a couple of dog biscuit recipes that she makes every now and again.
We're not sure if your competition is open to overseas followers but we'll understand if it isn't

ReplyDeleteThose look tasty Oz! I've made some sweet potato chips for Shiner before and I also wished I had cut them thinner. I don't have a mandolin though and cutting sweet potatoes is tricky sometimes!
