The Best Part of a Presidential Library - The Presidential Pets

While Ma and Daddy-dog were in Dallas for the Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter Work Project with Habitat for Humanity, they were able to get some time to do a little sightseeing within the city.  One of the places they visited was the George W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum on the campus of Southern Methodist University - conveniently located across the street from their hotel.

There were many things on display at the Library & Museum from George W. Bush's presidency including gifts they received, family photos, artifacts from 9-11 and presidential documents.

But Ma's favorite display happened to belong to the presidential pets, Barney and Miss Beasley, the Bush family's Scottish Terriers.  It was called "Barney's White House" and the main display shows photos of Barney and Miss Beasley, Barney's favorite volleyball (that he would play with on the South Lawn), the food bowls they used while flying on Air Force One and a few letters from children to Barney and Miss Beasley.  It is too cute!

I especially like Barney's fan mail...uh, I mean letters.  You cannot really see the words in the letters in the photo but the first one reads:

"Dear Barney,
I have heard that you are a well behaved dog in the wite house. Sometime could you send me a picture of yourself? I am a very good girl and I hope that you are having fun in the wite house.  Could I come visit you sometime Barney?
Love, Kathryn"

Oh, letters like that can make you teary-eyed.  I sure hope Barney responded to the letters from children.  I know I would respond...if I was ever that famous.  How about you?

Have your parents ever visited a presidential library?
Would they think that the presidential pets section was the best part?

  1. No, we have never been to a presidential library, but we are Canadian, so maybe that is why. Lady did some research years ago at the Library of Congress. The dogs would have been our favourite part too!

  3. Yes, surely an intern or staffer would have made sure that sweet letters like that were answered and enclosed a picture. Never been to a presidential library but we enjoy seeing their homes and have been to Truman's, Eisenhower's, Jefferson's, Washington's, Madison's, and Monroe's. It helps if you live in Virginia of course!

  16. My mom has visited one or two, but it was a long time ago and she doesn't remember anything special about them. Nice that the Bushes have their dogs things displayed there, I bet no too many presidents do that.

  21. That is so cool! I wonder what treats a presidential dog gets to eat. I always answer letters that people write me about my books. I'm sure Barney responded. I'm super glad that you are still Halloween hopping with us!! Feel better ♥
