I am so glad that we have all month to celebrate senior
dogs! Being a senior dog myself, I think
Senior Dogs are Super Dogs!
According to Grey Muzzle Organization, there are thousands
of senior dogs living in shelters. The 3
most common reasons for senior dogs ending up in shelters are 1) owners moving
to where pets aren't allowed, 2) medical issues that owners refuse to take care
of, and 3) their owner passes away. These
reasons are really such a shame because Senior Dogs are SUPER Dogs.
There are some great reasons to Adopt a SUPER Senior Dog.
Top 3 Reasons to Adopt a Senior
Dog are:
1) You Know What You
are Getting - their full-grown size, their grooming requirements, their
personality won't be surprises to you.
And even if their personality is such that they are bit nervous or
skittish, just know that your love and caring may help make them into the
confident dog they once were.
2) You Can Count on
Fewer Messes - senior dogs are way past puppyhood and probably won't chew your
shoes or chew your furniture and they most likely will be housetrained.
3) You Will Get Lots
of LOVE - senior dogs will be focused on giving and receiving love (and lots of
cuddles). Take it from me, when I was a
puppy and a younger dog, I didn't want to be cuddled or held or carried...no
way! I wanted to be down on the ground
exploring everything! But now, as a
newly aged senior dog, I have found I do enjoy some quiet time cuddled up with
Ma or Daddy-dog.

There are soooooo many wonderful reasons to adopt Senior dogs!! Most of us n our pack are seniors...and yep, while Mr Arty puppypants wants to spend most of his time playing and running...we like to spend it cuddled with Mama and Daddy (although we do take turns keeping him in line ;-))!

When I was a young pup, the first time They left me alone (for 30 minutes while They went next door), I pulled the door jamb out of the baseboard. That wouldn't happen now.

Seniors are more mellow. We love our senior sis Katie, but it is sad to see her getting old some days when she has trouble.
ReplyDeleteSeniors are the best, and those are definitely great reasons to adopt one! Seniors seem pretty happy to do whatever you want to do....whether it is just to be a couch potato, or to go for nice long walks. They always seem to want to be by your side.

We did adopt a senior dog. I think we can call Vaks a senior. He is 8 year. There is only a thing i think you should know: It maybe will take a little longer before your adopted senior dog is totally comfortable with you. They have to learn to trust you. It did take our Vaks about 5 month, but now he is the cutest dog and we love him and he loves us.

ReplyDeleteLove this article - it's so true that what you see is what you get - a loving instant companion. Whenever I go to events or volunteer I make a beeline for the seniors because I know they'll be so gentle and loving. It's so sad that they're so often overlooked when it comes to adoptions; hopefully all these positive messages will help spread the word about how awesome senior dogs are. To think you could go to the shelter and come home with an instant best friend - a dog that just wants to be loved and cared for - it doesn't get any better than that.
