3 Important Reminders to Keep Pets Safe for the Holidays

They're coming...and they're coming sooner than you think.  Yep, the Holidays are right around the corner and with them comes visitors and guests, turkey and trimmings and lots of decorations.

Oz the Terrier Holiday Pet Safety Reminders

That's why our friends at Petco are sharing some important reminders on how you can keep your pets safe throughout the Holiday season.

3 Important Reminders to Keep Pets Safe for the Holidays

Visitors, Guests & Gatherings:  We all have family and friends stopping by or staying over during the holidays.  All that commotion can cause some pets to become anxious, scared or grumpy so it is best to provide a calm, private area for your pets to escape to just in case things get overwhelming.  Also, remind your visitors and guests to close all doors to the outside to prevent your pets getting out or running away.

Turkey and all the Trimmings:  You, or your guests, may be tempted to sneak a yummy morsel of table food to your pets but this could be harmful to their health.  Foods like grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, turkey bones and certain nuts can cause pets to become seriously ill.  Stick to giving your pets special pet treats or pet food instead.

Pet Holiday Safety: feed your pets special pet food as table scraps can be harmful

Decorations galore:  Though my friends Frankie & Ernie would tell you that snowmen (or as they call them - snow freaks) are evil and dangerous, the real dangers lie with many other decorations.  Tinsel can block a pet's intestines; tree lights and candles can be burning hazards; ornaments can cause a pet to choke or get cut (if they fall off the tree and break); and electric cords can cause serious injury.  It is best to keep decorations out of your pet's reach.

Do you have any other important reminders for holiday safety?

Did you know that Petco is hosting a Preserve your Dog's Paw Print event today?  Visit your local Petco to make a clay imprint of your dog's paw for the holidays.  Petco will provide all the supplies.

  7. You forgot to mention that if you own a dog like my sister Bailie, she needs to be locked up as you never know what she may get into.

  9. Excellent advice Oz. Don't forget that too much turkey skin (with all that fat) can cause problems like pancreatitis too.

  12. Great tips, Oz. I hope no one has to spend the howl-i-days at the ER and no one runs away. Our doors are always locked... and we only decorate with things what will not hurt me when I eat it :o)

  14. Great advice. We always tell our company not to feed the dogs, but since I have one brother-in-law that just doesn't listen, I try to be sure most things around are pet safe. We usually have a room we'll put the dogs in for at least some of the time so they can just relax away from the commotion.
This year we're trying to figure out how we can have a Christmas tree with Luke being such a kleptomaniac!

  21. Great tips Oz. I saw something to make paw print ornaments somewhere in my recent travels. I thought it was a great idea. Too bad I missed the Petco thing.
