Last week, I discussed why Dog Dental Health was so important and told you about one of my favorite commercial dental treats, WHIMZEES. Throughout the remainder of the month, I will be talking to you about some other dental treats as well but today I wanted to share with you how my raw diet, specifically Raw Bones, can make a positive impact on a dog's dental health.
There are two types of raw bones - raw meaty bones and raw recreational bones. Raw meaty bones are just as they sound, bones with a good portion of raw meat and connective tissue attached. Raw recreational bones have only a bit of meat but still have all the connective tissue attached to the bone. Both types of bones provide dogs with protein, essential fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, and antioxidants.
The meat and connective tissue allow for great chewing including using the front teeth to nibble and pull the remaining tissues from the bone. When a dog chews on a raw bone, it helps scrape the teeth clean, preventing plaque and tartar build up, gingivitis and periodontal disease. The meat and connective tissue provide an added bonus of massaging a dog's gums and flossing the teeth.

You don't have to be a raw fed dog to enjoy gnawing on a raw meaty bone or raw recreational bone but you should be aware:
- Always choose the right size bone; you don't want it to be too small so that it becomes a choking hazard.
- Be sure your pet parent is supervising you the whole time you have the bone.
- Create a separate area (crate, towel, etc) to enjoy your bone that is easy to clean up; it is raw after all and will make a bit of a mess.
- If you are an aggressive chewer, a raw bone may not be a good option for you; raw bones can damage teeth if you are not careful.
A raw bone is the 100% all-natural dental treat for dogs.
Have you ever tried a raw bone as a dental treat?
Happy Tasty Tuesday!
We always have raw bones...usually once a week. We are always supervised, because some dogs try to get two....just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteMy girls love those bones! I try to get them regularly!
ReplyDeleteOh Oz, I had my furst bone the other Sunday, boy oh boy was it just the yummiest thingy evers!
ReplyDeleteLoves and licky kisses

We don't do bones here as we know they might end up in bed buried LOL. Have a terrific Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
I love this bones, but I'm a greedy guy and I swallow big pieces :o( sadly the staff decided that I can't have such a delicious bone...ok, it wasn't comfy as my dad had to put his arm into my mouth :o) but you could eat one for me, Oz :o)

Our dogs are aggressive chewers so bones are not a great option for them. I do think raw bones are a great choice for many dogs though.
ReplyDeleteJimmy and Wilson get a raw marrow bone once a week in good weather (as they eat them out in the backyard), and as often as the winter weather allows this time of year. Just so long as it is sunny and about 40 degrees, it's a go!
ReplyDeleteI don't do the raw diet but my huskies LOVE raw bones!!!! That it definitely their fav treats of all.
ReplyDeleteღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
WE just LOVE raw bones.... we only get them in the WARM months... beclaws we tend to want to drag them all over the house... so mom makes us stay OUTSIDE with them...
ReplyDeleteGrocery Stores USED to GIVE them to Peeps for their dogs... NOW they CHARGE for them...

We're not really raw bone people, but Jones bones are the next best thing to raw and will keep longer, so it's all good.
ReplyDeleteWe are raw feeders and my dogs get chicken necks for breakfast a few days a week. This has really cut down on their tartar build up and helps keep their teeth clean. Delilah is a voracious chewer and has broken a tooth with her chewing so I stay away from the recreational bones.
ReplyDeleteThe are some good benefits to feeding raw.
Haley loves getting raw bones and you're right, they do kind of make a mess, so summertime is ideal so she can take them outside on the deck. The local butcher shop usually gives them to us for free!
ReplyDeleteIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOVVVVVVE MEEEEAAAAAT!

Great post mate! We all LOVE raw bones BOL BOL!!
ReplyDeleteNukNuk
We've had raw bones, but we prefer antlers, except for Katie, she isn't much for antlers.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a dog I would like those too!
ReplyDeleteGering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding Oz the Great ~ WOW those bones now that would be my dental cleaning health product of choice! Sadly Lee says that I am the last one you listed the aggressive chew guy. You know when I look at all that you get my life as a dog is really a dogs life. Thank goodness I don't have to live in a dog house.
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing me what I am missing out on.
Sweet William The Scot
Sounds better then brushing!
ReplyDeleteMaggie doesn't like bones too much, but Jack does - I've given him some but he just inhales them so fast and makes such a mess he doesn't get them often.
ReplyDeleteWe used to love antlers & bones until just recently, when our boy Buzz fractured one of his upper molars so badly on his beef bone he got for Christmas, that it had to be surgically removed. Major ouch-factor & another vet bill, yikes. We're very careful as far as chewing on bones is concerned, now..
ReplyDeleteraw bones are our favorite - we especially love our frozen bison bones that have lots of yummy marrow in the middle.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good reminder! One of the mistakes I sometimes see people making is boiling the bones which can cause cracking and splintering!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried raw bones because Mauja and Atka are such aggressive chewers. Antlers do really well for them right now.
ReplyDeleteMy mommy cooks those kind of bones for me,, I like them!

I love a raw bone! Mom only lets me eat the tissue off it, and lick the marrow out. She throws it away if she sees me getting too into it. She doesn't want me to chip a tooth on the bone. We just bought a pack of bones today like the one in your photo (at the grocery store)! Mom put them in the freezer for a few days, she will thaw Baron and I each a bone next week :)
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Pepper
We would LOVE to have bones in our home but Mama said something about fights, hoarding, stealing....so we are not allowed bones. :-(
ReplyDeleteSmileys!

Shiner has not tried one before, but I am kind of scared to give her one... I worry she'll choke on it or not chew it up like it's supposed to be chewed. She tries to eat everything as fast as possible!
ReplyDeletewe love raw bones and smoked ones here.
ReplyDeleteWe have and the dogs love them! However, we've had to limit how many we use because of Heather's teeth issues. Thanks for being a friend! Much love, The Scottie Mom.
