Do You Give Your Dog Knuckle Bones? | Barkworthies

Being on a raw diet, I get to eat my share of bones.  There is ground bone in many of my prepared raw meals.  I also get a recreational bone to chew on every now and again.  But I have only recently been introduced to knuckle bones.

Oz the Terrier with grass-fed, free-range Beef Knuckle Bone from Barkworthies

I have received a few knuckle bones, including this one from Barkworthies, over the last month or so though Ma has been hesitant to open them because they are cooked bones.  Ma was concerned that the cooked meat would give me an upset tummy or that I would be able to break off a piece of the bone and ingest it which can be dangerous.

I reminded Ma there are things to worry about when gnawing on a raw bone as well which is why I am only allowed to have a bone in a place where I can be supervised.  In addition, selecting the right bone in the right size is always important and this Barkworthies Beef Knuckle Bone is the size of my head, so it's not like I'd be swallowing it whole any time soon.  One less thing to worry about.

Like much of the raw beef that I eat, the Barkworthies Knuckle Bones come from grass-fed, free-range cattle.  Barkworthies sources their cattle from Brazil, one of the highest quality beef providers in the world.   The Knuckle Bones are additive-free, chemical-free and preservative-free.  The only ingredient is Beef Knuckle Bone (with meat and tendons still attached).

Barkworthies Beef Knuckle Bone is 100% natural dog chew

Have you gnawed on a knuckle bone?  Ma has allowed me to gnaw on this Barkworthies bone a few times but there are rules:

1.  I can only have it on the special place Ma creates (towel) in the living room.
2.  I must be supervised at all times.
3.  I can only have it after a meal which has had time to digest.
4.  I can only have it for a few minutes at a time.

By following the rules, I have safely enjoyed this huge Knuckle Bone by Barkworthies.  The bits of meat and tendon are nice and crunchy, which I love.  Second to crunching the meaty bits of the Knuckle Bone, I love hiding the bone around the house (though Ma always finds it and puts it away).

  1. I'm a fan of that knuckle bones, they keep me busy for a while and they are super tasty... butt: I can't have them, because I'm as greedy as a lion and I swallow big pieces... and that leads to a canine fountain :o(

    1. Hmmm, see that is what Ma was worried about with me I think, Easy. Of course, since she supervises me I cannot just eat them like a greedy lion or she will take it away.

  2. We have never tried those so we must tell Mom. She only lets us have bones snoopervised and separated from each other cause we tend to yell at each other.

    1. OK, so you are supervised too! That's good. I don't have to worry about yelling at a sibling as I am an only dog but I can see how that might be a problem. Your mom is smart to separate you.

  3. we have always had raw knuckle bones - they are hard to find though and usually you have to know a good butcher who can get them for us.

  4. I have given knuckle bones before. I always make sure and supervise though as you said. I can't say that i'm 100% comfortable giving any type of bones to the pups but, they really do love them!

    1. I think supervision is the most important thing when eating a bone. Hmmm, I'm not sure Ma is 100% comfortable either but she is trying.

    1. See, I haven't even had a raw knuckle bone. Ma is a chicken when it comes to bones, I think. BOL This one is quite heavy too. I can carry it but not for long distances which means can find it because I cannot make it to my favorite hiding spot. I would agree that YES, real bones are the best!

    2. My mum gives me raw marrow bones which have been refrigerated or frozen. She usually gives me one when she is going out without me. I luvs luvs luvs them, but as I say, she usually gives it to me if she is going out without me, so I give her the sad "are you really leaving me here" look, but as soon as I hear her keys in the door, I start chewing. She has caught me a couple of times cos she has come back to get something she has forgotten!!!!

      Enjoy

    1. Yes, I have a Jones one too but it is much smaller. This one IS big which is also why Ma gives it to me at different times. If I ate all of that in one sitting, I surely would have an upset tummy.

    1. Stella Rose, I am sure you mom means well. My Ma worries too. It's because they love us and don't want us to get sick or injured. That said, you should be able to try one once, with supervision, I would think.

  12. No, mine don't get knuckle bones. We like to give antlers and nylabones - the antlers are a firm favourite. But they would sure love to chomp on on of these!!!

  15. Little Bit doesn't get bones. She gets a Little Bit Bone aka carrot. And, she carefully chews her "bones" into little bits. Our pet rats get all of the real bones including the chicken bones. They don't swallow chunks. They gnaw the bones. So, we don't have to worry.

  16. Mom worries about bones too. Anything that can have pieces chewed off we are supervised. Butt we have never had a knuckle bone - looks tasty but we probably would have a hard time chewing on one with our flat faces!

  17. We always have raw bones.....beef knuckles are the best. Ours are sawn down the middle at the butchers and we can get out all that marrow. AND there's always enough chew in them for several days. Your bone looks scrumptious.

I've given my dogs knucklebones in the past but recently 'graduated' to elk antlers because they don't make a mushy mess in the house and don't smell. Sam loves them even more.

  23. You knows, I've never had a bone befores!!! I thinks it's puppy abuse myself, and I keeps tellin' Ma that, butts she just pshaw's me! Can you believes it??! Yeah, me neither. Anyhu, I thinks those Rules are the key ~ if you follow those, you should be just fine! That is, if you can gets it outta my mouth...hehehe

  25. I have heard of Barkworthies, but we haven't given them a try yet. We used to give our pups antlers and bones on a regular basis, but ever since our boy Buzz fractured a tooth on a beef bone (it had to be surgically removed in its entirety!!), we have refrained from giving any bones.

  26. I'm glad you got a knuckle bone my gang thinks they are the tastyest and they get them quite often.

  27. I'm scared to give my dog cooked bones in general, so I haven't given Ace a knuckle bone. But, I used to work at a dog boarding kennel that sold cooked knuckle bones. There were regulars who bought dozens at a time and their dogs loved them! I'm sure Ace would too! I think your tips on supervising are great and every dog is different. Ace would probably actually be fine chewing on a knuckle bone. I'm just a big worrier so it's interesting to hear everyone else's takes on this.
