Ma, Daddy-dog and I braved the bangs and booms of nearby fireworks (that started before it even got dark - what is wrong with people) and walked over to Bentley's house. Ma gently scooped up the baby birds and let us both give them a sniff. They were perfectly healthy and they were hungry. Poor babies.
While Daddy-dog searched the tree for the nest, Ma kept the babies safe. Bentley and I got to check on them several times as they fell asleep in Ma's hands. Daddy-dog found the nest but it was too high up for the extension ladder to reach safely so we went with Plan B.
We learned Plan B the last time we found a baby bird on the ground. If you cannot reach the original nest, create a fake nest out of a box, attach it in the tree as high as you can get it and then place the baby bird in the fake nest. The Mama bird will find the baby and feed it.
And...it is just an old wive's tale that if you handle baby birds the Mama bird will ignore them. Most North American birds can be handled and safely returned to the nest!

Didn't know about the fake nest..... We usually just leave them alone as any birdies we've tried to nurture don't make it.

OMD, y'all can add bird rescuers to your resume!!!! Last week a baby bird was learning to fly and doing a terrible job.....it was an all bird alert in our back yard with the mama bird trying to help her baby bird and at one point she attacked the pussy cat!! BOL!! It was epic!!!!!! The pussy cat retweeted to her safe spot on the porch and licked her wounds!! BOL BOL BOL BOL!!!!

That is very good to know, Oz. We hope the baby birds' Mama came back to bring them to their nest. Those fireworks start early here too - very stressful for poor Ciara.

Aw so cute! What an adventure. I've helped some wild birds before... quite a few actually. Some of them turned out great, and others did not unfortunately :( But birds are tricky little creatures.
ReplyDeleteAw, way too precious. Way to step up and be heroes to the little peepers. Paws crossed that they flourish and mama bird doesn't stroke out when she goes to the original nest. Will a box hold up in the rain?
ReplyDeleteA couple years ago Mom pulled a baby wabbit out of my throat. I tried to swallow it when I got caught, but she got it out and it lived...just some shock probably, and I was real mad!

Glad you were able to help. The closest we have come to helping wildlife is to have baby skunks trapped and moved who were living under our front step (because that is where mom died).

ReplyDeleteDing ding ding ding Oz The Great & Powerful Friend To All Animals ~ Yes I have rescued baby birds many times. We have even fed them with an eye dropper when the Mama was killed. Right now I have three babies in a hanging basket on my porch~one hatched on the 3rd, one on the 4th and one on the 5th. They don't have any feathers yet.

Aw they are sooooo adorable!!! In my life I have had to do this a few times when I see baby birds who have fallen from their nests. So sad for the poor things!
