Today is National Mutt Day. Established by Pet Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige, it is a day to celebrate mixed breed dogs and to raise awareness of the millions of mutts in shelters who are waiting for their forever home.
If you, or someone you know, is looking for a loving, healthy companion, today is the day to strongly encourage them to visit their local shelter and hopefully adopt their new, mixed breed best friend! If you cannot adopt, then please consider supporting your local shelter, and all the mutts there, by donating food, supplies, money or your time as a volunteer.
And here is a great way to celebrate National Mutt Day: take your dog for a walk and Walk for a Dog at your local shelter by using the WoofTrax smartphone app! The Walk for a Dog app is a fitness tracker for walking your dog and it tracks your walk distance, average speed and the route of your walk.
The Walk for a Dog app is a free download for iOS and Android smartphones created by Doug Hexter. Mr. Hexter was inspired to invent the app to harness the energy of the millions of people who are walking their dogs to create a social good - supporting each walker's selected animal organization.
Mr. Hexter’s own dog Cassie—who serves as the virtual companion for anyone who wants to help raise money for shelter animals but doesn’t currently have a dog of their own—is a rescue, so the idea to give back to animal shelters and rescues through the app is very personal to him. Donations are based on the number of people who are actively walking for your selected organization and are funded by sponsorships, advertising, and investors. App users may also make their own personal gift to their selected organization, directly through the app.
I can't think of a better way to celebrate National Mutt Day than by walking your dog and raising money for dogs in need of a forever home! Actually, I think the Walk for a Dog app is a great way to support your local shelter every day!

I celebrated with my new buddy. It's a mixed breed and two nice peeps adopted her after they finished their new house.
