This week is International Assistance Dog Week (IADW). IADW was created to recognize of all the devoted, hardworking assistance dogs helping individuals mitigate their disability-related limitations. Though I am not an Assistance Dog, I know several including very good friend Carma Poodale.
Carma is a medical alert/mobility dog for a person who has MS. She helps brace her human when getting up and down (beds, seats) as well as walking from room to room. Carma can sense when her human is tired and will nudge her human towards a chair (or someplace where he or she can lean). She also provides reminders when it is time to take medication. Like all mobility dogs, Carma is also able to pull a wheel chair , fetch a cane and retrieve dropped items.
Assistance Dogs transform the lives of their human partners and during International Assistance Dog Week, everyone is encouraged to:
- recognize and honor these hardworking assistance dogs;
- raise awareness and educate the public about how these specially trained dogs are aiding so many people in our communities;
- honor the puppy raisers and trainers of assistance dogs; and
- recognize heroic deeds performed by assistance dogs in our communities.
Do you know an Assistance Dog that you can recognize during International Assistance Dog Week?

I didn't realize Carma was an Assistance Dog! We've met several through our work with the American Humane Assoc Hero Dog Awards and they never cease to amaze me. Thanks for sharing this, Oz! They deserve big honors today and everyday! :-)
ReplyDeleteYes, I knew one. Her peep had a brain tumor and the GSD could recognize an attack was happening before anyone else and meds were applied quickly. She carried the meds around in a backpack so they were always there. After the owner crossed, the dog didn't last much longer. They were a bonded pair.
ReplyDeleteI am in training as a Service Dog for my mum, so thanks for the awareness alert oz. I have not had a great deal of training yet because Phyllis (the trainer) comes to my house and we work outside and the ground is just tooooo hot during the summer. Hopefully I will start again soon. We do clicker training and I get LOTS of treats when we train, bol. Thanks again for the awareness, Oz

Dogs sense things that we people tune out. They are generally very caring and amazing creatures, especially service/assistance dogs!
ReplyDeleteThank you for featuring me and Service Dogs all over the world. It took a lot of training but it was well worth it. I am proud of my job as a service dog.
ReplyDeleteOh I didn't know! I will have to do up a post as well for this!

As the mom of a pet therapy (and Standard Poodle) dog, I especially salute Carma and the work she does. These assistance pets are truly remarkable caregivers and patients and healthcare providers adore their assistance. Kudos to you for showcasing Ms. Carma, a very remarkable pooch. :)
ReplyDeleteThere were many assistance dogs on campus when I was going to school. One girl had a chihuahua for a semester, which was sooooooo cute! The girl who had him changed him out the next semester for a larger dog. I wondered what happened to the chi, but never asked.
ReplyDeleteWe are very impressed with assistance dogs like your friend Carma and all the good work they do! We didn't know they had a week to be recognized but they should be recognized always!
ReplyDelete"Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Oz my friend Hello ~ You know when I have on my green vest and wear my patch people inquire how I can be and assistance dog or why am I allowed places without my Lee having a cane or being blind. We have to explain that I am just a Reader Dog and can go just some special places. KUDOS to all those outstanding dogs who make life easier on those who have challenges. And a real growl to those who say dogs are stupid.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a friend
