Stormy Weather

Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy Weather...
--Billie Holiday

We have had thunderstorms every day since Labor Day.  I've been spending a lot of time in my Thundershirt, curled up next to Ma on the couch.

Oz the Terrier staying safe as a thunderstorm passes by

Some of the lightning strikes have hit close to my home.  We sometimes find ourselves doing "the count" between the flash of lightning to the thunder instead of checking our WeatherBug app.

However on Monday, Labor Day, we didn't have to count because the lightning either hit our house or right across the street.  We saw a flash of lightning and almost instantaneously heard a big BANG then the power went out.  The power came back on right away but some items, like our cable box and an old television, were incinerated.

Did you know Florida has the highest lightning strike density of anywhere in the U.S.?  We get approximately 12 lightning strikes per square mile per year.  Then Ma wonders why I have grown into a dog who doesn't like thunderstorms.

Here's to a weekend when the sun is up in the sky!

  2. Oz I'm so sorry that this thunderstorms come back again and again. I cross my paws that there is no hard damage and that nothing will happen to you and your furmily... my mom and her cousin always counted the seconds between the lightning and thunder as they were little girls. once they counted and counted and thought it's over but suddenly the thunder came with 200 decibel... and the two little counters got wet pants with shock :o)

  3. We understand Oz - we get the thunderstorms too - every afternoon for the last month or so. Thunder never use to bother us and it still doesn't bother me the Reilly dog but Denny has started not to like it all and he too curls up close to Mom. For some reason the thunder seems so much louder here and ALWAYS seems to crash and boom right over our house making the windows shake. Mom plays ball or the red light game to help Denny take his mind off it. We saw on the weather report that it might actually get below 90 next week - maybe fall is finally starting to arrive.

  4. Oh my. I get it. We had one dat had lightening hit across da street and we all loss our telephone, cable, and our irrigation systems got zapped. It is scary when it's dat close. I'm just glad I wasn't home at da time of da storm.
I don't have me a thunder shirt yet cuz I don't shake for storms. Maybe when I get older... I may need one.
    Stay safe buddy.

  8. From June to September, we get "monsoons" in Arizona. There's lightening, thunder, wind and rain. You can get any one individually or any combination of the four including all four at once. We're so used to it, we sit back and enjoy the show. It usually happens in early evening and the lightening can be so intense and frequent, you'd think it was daylight.

  12. We had all that lightning here a lot this week, and Ciara is right there with you not liking it one bit. Lighning doesn't like lightning either, but he doesn't get visibly upset. We are hoping for a long stretch of sunny, storm-free weather too.

  13. oh my you poor baby! thank goodness the house itself didn't burn!!! Yes I knew that about Florida because I have family members who live in Miami and Plantation.
Believe it or not, Michigan (where I live), is pretty high on the list too. Have no clue as to why

  15. We've had lots of lightening and loud thunder, but no damages here. Most of our things that are important are on surge protectors so they hopefully won't fry. Hope your weekend is better.

  16. Oh Oz, that is scary...Jakey is shivering just thinking about it!! We had the same thing happen when we lived in Austin, but since moving to NorCal we don't get thunderstorms anymore (which makes Jakey very happy!).

  19. We are partners in the THA or Thunder Haters Anonymous! You should try the Smart Pet Love heartbeat Harness with the Thundershirt. I use them together and it truly has made an incredible difference. Bentley will even nap during storms and slept on the 4th of July! Here's the link on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Pet-Love-Sound-Harness/dp/B00I3NVXJS/ *I have no affiliate code or anything. I reviewed it and found it the best thing we have tried. I sometimes use it without the anxiety wrap.

  22. Oh no, Oz, that is so scary!! We hate storms here but have probably only had one really bad one so far this year. That really sucks that your stuff got blown up, we did have lightning strike our water well pump once many years ago...that was the worst.
We sure hope you are done with the storms by now!

  23. Please send some of thunderstorms out west. We can definitely use it to tone down some of the sunshine. May set records Monday and Tuesday with temps. #notautumnyet
