Yesterday I woke up with a very upset belly. Ma said it was because I ate something I wasn't supposed to the night before. Instead of feeding me my usual breakfast, she gave me some raw green tripe patties from Raw Paws Pet Food.
Tripe is the stomach of ruminating animals like cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats. I know many of you have had tripe as a treat but you can eat it with your meal or as a meal as well. Did you know that the white - or cleaned - tripe has far less health benefits for dogs than the green tripe?
So, why is raw green tripe so much healthier? Because it still contains all the gastric juices, amino acids and other digestive enzymes from the animal of origin and all of these are beneficial to dogs.
4 Benefits of Feeding Your Dog Raw Green Tripe
1. Improve Digestion
The digestive enzymes in green tripe are what help the ruminant animal digest his/her meal and those same digestive enzymes can help dogs digest their meal as well. Since dogs cannot break down cellulose, many of the nutrients found in vegetables are not readily available to them. However, the enzymes from the ruminant animal found in green tripe can help aid a dog to better breakdown those vegetables and gain valuable nutrients from them.
2. Strengthen Immune System
A dog's digestive tract is the largest immune organ in his/her body. Green tripe contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a species of gram-positive bacteria (and known probiotic) that can help keep other bacteria - such as e-coli, salmonella and listeria - in a dog's gut from overpopulating and causing health problems.
3. Improve Muscle Function
You will find both calcium and phosphorous in the correct ratio dogs' need in green tripe. Calcium and phosphorous are electrolytes that help regulate skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle contraction as well as facilitate nerve impulse transmission within the body.
4. Minimize Inflammatory Responses
Green tripe has two important fatty acids, Linoleic and Linolenic, in their recommended proportions for dogs. Linoleic and Linolenic acids are members of the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids groups that can help minimize inflammatory and allergic reactions as well as improve skin, coat and joint health.
If you are thinking that raw green tripe is a powerhouse of nutritional and health benefits, you would be right. It is also a powerhouse of smell, specifically the aroma of cow patties. It is because of the stink that many pet parents, even seasoned raw feeders, do not feed raw green tripe very often. I admit Ma gagged the first time she opened the bag of Frozen Raw Green Tripe Patties from Raw Paws Pet Food but in time, and knowing the benefits I would get from eating green tripe, she got over it.
If you don't think you could eat Frozen Raw Green Tripe, Raw Paws Pet Food offers a Freeze Dried Tripe as a treat and it is just as healthy. I know many of you are not on a raw diet but do eat freeze dried or dehydrated raw treats so let me say that Raw Paws offers some other very healthy treats as well. Two of my other current favorites are:
Beef Braided Intestine Sticks (delicious soft 6" chews that are great for reducing plaque and tartar build up and are rich in both glucosamine and chondroitin) and
Natural Cow Ears (harder chews that are not smoked so they will not stain carpets or floors and rich in glucosamine and chondroitin).
Raw Paws Pet Food wants you to be able to try some of their delicious and healthy dehydrated and freeze dried treats so they are offering Oz the Terrier readers a giveaway.
It's a little different in that 3 winners will be selected and each winner will receive one (1) of the three treats listed above - Freeze Dried Tripe, Beef Braided Intestine Sticks OR Natural Cow Ears. While you can leave a comment here on my blog with your choice of treat, I have also included an option for you to leave a comment IN THE RAFFLECOPTER.
Must be a U.S. Resident, age 18 years or older to enter the giveaway. The giveaway will close on October 30 at 11:59 PM EST. Good luck!
