5 Favorite Reasons to Adopt a Dog

October is Adopt-A-Dog Month® (American Humane Association) as well as Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month (ASPCA).  There are many reasons someone would or should adopt a dog into their life and I have chosen my 5 favorites to share with you.

5 reasons you should adopt a dog for adopt a dog month

Oz's 5 Favorite Reasons to Adopt a Dog

1. It will make you feel good.  Dogs are known to help keep their owners healthy.  Because dogs love going for walks, you have to get up and get moving which is great for your heart health and blood pressure.  Petting a dog releases a relaxation hormone in your body helping to alleviate your stress.  And...caring for a dog can provide a sense of purpose and lessen feelings of depression and loneliness.

2.  It will make the dog happy.  Dogs love having a companion too.  Don't you know dogs are man's guardian angels?!?  A dog needs someone to look after and care for as well.

3.  You will be a hero.  Did you know 2.7 million dogs are euthanized in shelters each year?  You may think "How can it make a difference if I just adopt one of those 2.7 million?" but remember, it will make a difference to that one dog!

4.  You will fight puppy mills.  By adopting a dog, you will be making sure that puppy mills aren't supported with your hard earned dollars.  Better yet, if you adopt a dog from the shelter you will know that your hard earned money (adoption fee) will go on to help more dogs!

5.  Your lives will be filled with adventure.  You and your adopted dog can have so many great adventures together whether it is just a walk to the park or a big hike in the woods.  Remember:  Life is either a great adventure or nothing (Helen Keller).  So why not share it with a dog?

Do you have a favorite reason why someone should adopt a dog?

  7. I know it is shocking, but my sisters and I are all adopted, but from reputable breeders. Most of the same five reasons apply. Mom tries to give us the best lives possible and we love to help her out with hers. We adopt those pesty felines from rescues...so there is some balance at our place.

  10. Excellent reasons to opt to adopt. Bentley was adopted from a family that wasn't ready for a new puppy. He was a surprise birthday present for the man. Puppies are never a good surprise gift.

  14. Lady says that as long as she lives (and as long as she doesn't need a seeing eye dog or something like that) every animal who crosses her door will be a rescue (either from a shelter or a rescue). It is a great cause. Thanks for sharing about it.
