When tent camping, we love to walk the campground to check out everybody’s campers, travel trailers and RVs. We especially love to see retro-style trailers like an old teardrop or classic Airstream while dreaming of the day we can turn in our tent for one. I know some of you already have an RV or trailer of your own (and we are jealous!) so we thought you would want to help celebrate Airstream’s 85 year anniversary.
Airstream is America’s oldest manufacturer of travel trailers. The rounded aluminum trailers are iconic on roads and highways across the U.S. and around the world. In celebration of eight decades of world-wide road trips Motorbooks has released the photo-rich Airstream: America’s World Traveler book by Patrick R. Foster.
Airstream: America’s World Traveler chronicles the history of the trailers, from their introduction after the Great Depression to the present day. One of our favorite parts is from the Early Days chapter which shares founder Wally Byam’s Creed – it is a creed that speaks to those of us who love travel and adventure.
Excerpt “The Wally Byam Creed”, Airstream: America’s World Traveler
“To place the great wide world at your doorstep for you who yearn to travel with all the comforts of home.
To provide a more satisfying, meaningful way of travel that offers complete travel independence, wherever you choose to go or stay.
To keep alive and make real an enduring promise of high adventure and faraway lands…of rediscovering old places and new interests.”
Before reading Airstream: America’s World Traveler we thought Airstream trailers were only road tripping around the U.S. Who knew people were pulling their Airstream trailers all over the world?!? Then, of the hundreds of photos included in the book – of Airstream trailers in Africa, Mexico, France, pretty much everywhere – is a photo of a 1950s family and their Airstream stopping in my home state of Florida to get their photo taken with some Seminole Indians!
In the 85 years since the very first Airstream, the company has produced some of the finest trailers in the world and has built a worldwide reputation as the Rolls Royce of travel trailers. Airstream: America’s World Traveler is a great book for those who want to read about the iconic trailers’ history as well as for those who just want to enjoy a photographic tour of the trailer through the years.
Airstream: America’s World Traveler is the embodiment of the last lines of Wally Byam’s Creed:
“…to stir the venturesome spirit that moves you to follow a rainbow to its end…and thus make your travel dreams come true.”
We can only hope our dream of someday ditching the tent for a travel trailer comes true too! Airstream: America’s World Traveler is available at QuartoKnows.com, Amazon and anywhere fine books are sold.
Do you dream of traveling with a trailer filled with all the comforts of home? Where would you go?
Ohhhhhh Oz we agree the Airstreams were ahead of their time...and obviously well made 'cause folks are still lovin' them 85 years later.
ReplyDeleteHugs madi your bfff
PS there is a Gypsy's Shiny diner about 25 miles from us. It is made to look like an Airstream

We have a travel trailer that is pretty comfy - not too fancy. Mom & Dad hope to get more use out of it next year after they retire!

Nope, no camping, no RV life for us. Mom likes a nice hotel. She is funny that way, but we do enjoy looking at different RV's, and Airstream is a cool brand.
ReplyDeleteWe would love to try an Airstream road trip some day. Unpacking and repacking every night for our recent road trip was very stressful! Plus they are so cool looking!
ReplyDeleteSchool holidays here and we've been watching a myriad of RVs and Caravans around town. No Airstreams, though.
ReplyDeleteThe head peep's idea of roughing it is slow wifi in a fancy hotel, so she's probably not going to let us go camping any time soon, but we think the shiny Airstream looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteOur mom dreams of buying an RV and travelling all over the USA to visit all our blog friends. Unfortunately our dad doesn't share the same dream...not to mention the expense.
ReplyDeleteWe think it would be really fun to travel the US of A in a trailer like that.
ReplyDeleteNeat post! I would drive all over the US and stop whenever the spirit moved me!
ReplyDeleteVery cool
ReplyDeleteSince our "tent days" are a thing of the past, I would LOVE an Airstream!
ReplyDeleteWe would also love an Airstream!! Mama has promised us a camping trip in a wheelie house next spring...we can't WAIT!
ReplyDeleteSmileys!

Very cool!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had an Airstream years ago! We are quite pleased with our RV right now, but if we were to get another one, it would probably be the same brand! It is easier for us to rent cars when we get to our destination than it is to tow a car. We have been doing this for eight years now...and so far, so good!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with that America’s World Traveler chronicles the history of the car trailers, from their introduction after the Great Depression to the present day. It's a great inspirational article. Lovely book for this story. How can I get this book?
