Oz has been having a terrible time with allergies this season and they all came to a head a few days ago when I noticed he had ear infections in both ears. He has spent a lot of his days resting in his various beds around the house but has taken a special liking to his TrustyPup Remedy Rest dog bed since it allows him to bury himself in plush comfort.
About a month ago, our vet recommended trying a new allergy medication which is a monthly injection. It is called CADI - Canine Atopic Dermatitis Immunotherapeutic and it is supposed to bind with a specific protein in dogs with atopic dermatitis and neutralize it.
When Oz first received the injection about a month ago, he tolerated it well. I was worried about side effects but my research continues to bring up that there are no known side effects from CADI. I observed the hives on his skin dry up and he stopped scratching at himself. All was going well.
Now, a month later, he is still not itching and scratching but both ears have a pretty substantial fungal infection. According to the vet, his recurrent ear infections of the past were related to his allergies so I can only assume the current infections are allergy-related as well.
I can't say that I am not a little disappointed as I thought the CADI might help his ears too. Oz has not been himself the last couple of days - he has been very mopey and rests a lot. We are visiting the vet later today to get some care for his ears.
Once his ears clear up, I am going to start using the "Purple Stuff", talked about by our friends at Barking from the Bayou and My GBGV Life, to keep his ears clean. I meant to try it a long time ago but never could find the necessary ingredients at my local drug stores. Thankfully, all can be found on Amazon and I already placed my order. I will let you know if the "Purple Stuff" works.
For now, I hope our vet visit today will help resolve his current ear infections so Oz feels better.

Poor Oz, please get well soon!
ReplyDeletePoor guy, my mother has had two dogs with severe allergies, and I've seen how miserable it makes them.
ReplyDeletePoor Ozzie, itching and yucky ears are no fun at all. We hope the purple stuff does the trick for him. Feel better, pal.

I hope you feel better soon, Oz!
ReplyDeleteOK, Purple Stuff is the scientific name. What's the common name?
ReplyDeleteGet well soon, buddy. Ear infections are no fun. Mom's old dog had lots of allergies and the purple stuff worked well on her ears. I hope it helps keep you ear infection free!
ReplyDeleteLove and licks,
Cupcake
You poor guy, Oz! We hope the purple stuff clears up your ears!
ReplyDeleteCammie!
Oh sweet Oz I'm so sorry to hear your ears are feeling icky. We both live (and you worse than me) in HOT HUMID climates. I expect the climate along with having slightly floppy ears makes for a very good place for fungi to grow. Lots of healing hugs madi your bfff
ReplyDeletePaws crossed that the purple stuff works, too. We're lucky that we haven't had allergy problems....knock on wood. But years ago, SHE had a dog with a flea allergy that just could not be cured or maintained....so sad.
ReplyDeleteI hope he gets to feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteAwe feel better soon Oz.
ReplyDeleteYou know that I was thinking "Purple Stuff" the entire time that I was reading this as I do with anyone whose dog is suffering. I can honestly say that Bentley went from infections every two months to not having one in over a year and a half. It is a miracle in a bottle and so much cheaper than anything that you can buy OTC. Sending Oz our love and sympathy. Ear infections are horrid.
ReplyDeleteSorry that your ears are acting up and we hope it is not the new medicine causing it. We have heard that the purple stuff works well

Such a bummer you have bad allergies. We are fortunate to not have them, but Mom has had a lot of allergy issues in her life. Hang in there!
ReplyDeletepotp to you Oz... and I hope the vet has a treatment that the ear-infection runs away from you soon...
ReplyDeleteShiner has been having a crummy time too. Glad you wrote about this and told us about CADI. Going to ask about it. And please let me know how that purple stuff is! I also wanted to try that but forgot about it until now.
ReplyDeleteHope this time it works. It's hard to see our pets suffer even just from allergies.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post. Good to know!
Poor Oz! We've been lucky not to have to deal with allergies yet, but I can just see how miserable they can make so many pets. I hope the vet visit helped Oz, and that you have good luck with that purple stuff.
